Not sure if this should go in GQ since it really is factual, but it is also about food, but not about food for humans . . . so . . .
Anyways, my buddy’s birthday is coming up and I am baking him a cake. I am also super fond of his dog and would like to make something for the doggie if possible. I found a recipe I like online, but it consists entirely of “people food” and I’m not sure if that is safe for dogs to eat. Here is the recipe:
For the record, this particular dog eats people food frequently and his owner is not picky about what he eats. Also, the dog never gets sick (one time he ate two huge pieces of chocolate cake and was totally fine). He is a large dog of indeterminate breed.
Sounds fine. Dogs can eat peanuts. There’s at least one kind of true nut they shouldn’t eat, but I don’t remember which one. And some dogs shouldn’t have too much grain, but it’s just treats.
At worst, the milk might give the dog gas, but that’s not really very much of it.
The chocolate thing is overrated, too: On a per-weight basis, theobromine is only two or three times more poisonous to dogs than it is to humans. The big risk is that, first, dogs usually weigh less than humans, and second, a dog might gorge itself on 5% or more of its body mass in a single sitting, while even the most chocoholic human wouldn’t.
