Nearly 40 and got it. I remember her show from the early 70s but not much about it as I was a toddler and kindygarden baby.
Dinah Shore, I only know by name. Wouldn’t be able to tell you what she looked like or what songs she sang, but of course I got the Dinah Shore/dinosaur pun right away.
She also had Tom Waits on her show, and had a splendid conversation with him. You could tell Waits had the utmost respect for her as a singer and song stylist and vice versa.
I got the joke, and note that in the 1949 movie “On the Town” the resemblance between “Dinah Shore” and “Dinosaur” is also referenced (a cop, hearing the report on the police radio of “collapse of dinosaur” (at a museum), is worried about his favorite singer)
Didn’t she have a signature tune–something about San Francisco (not I Left My Heart…–that’s Tony Bennett–but something about a cable car)? I remember her. Blonde, capable singer, I saw her on stuff like Carol Burnett (she was Melody in “Went With the Wind”, the BEST sketch ever on a variety show) and various talk shows.
I’m 47. I think I did used to mix her up with Dr Joyce Brothers–they looked alike to me and I didn’t know the difference.
It has just come to my attention that it has been 10 years since Dinah Shore’s name was officially attached to the tournament now titled the Kraft Nabisco Championship. But people still call it the Dinah Shore.
I know who Dinah Shore is and I got the reference right away. I’ll be 48 on Dec 1st (send cards!).
46 here, and I had a brief crush on Dinah Shore growing up. My annual Xmas tape has her in a duet singing “Baby It’s Cold Outside”…love the sound of her voice.
She just got her own postage stamp.
Took me 2-3 seconds. Didn’t immediately look for a pun. “Walked the earth” is the phrase more familiar to me, but I understand that may not be as good advertising. I am old enough to know her pretty well.
Late 40’s here, I know who she is, I didn’t get the pun immediately but it’s early and I’m still working on my coffee. I did get it when you mentioned that people weren’t getting the title so I didn’t need the spoiler.
I’m only 36, but I got it. Dinah Shore is one of my standards-singer heroines though, so I’m perhaps ahead of my time. Or behind my time. I’m not sure.
And there is the Dinah Shore Week (formerly weekend) in Palm Springs, a huge lesbian gathering with concerts, expos, parties, etc. It occurs at the same time as, but is not in any way affiliated with the golf tournament.
Knew her back when, got the joke, remember her Burt days.
I only remember seeing the Dinah Shore show when I stayed home from school because of illness. She would be on late morning TV my mom used to watch it and to me it was an old ladies program, but I do remember.
I think you’re misremembering. It was Tony Clifton who did that.
I only get it when I say it aloud. And, even then, the supposed phrase is rare enough that I didn’t think of it. I’m 24.
Of course, I live in a very Creationist community. They don’t believe dinosaurs ever ruled the earth. That was Adam’s job.
Oh, God, kaylasdad! That was the first thing I thought of when I read this thread. “Cecil Meets the Singing Dinosaur”. We go way back.
Here signature tune was “Button And Bows.” I was also very impressed with her version of “Georgia On My Mind.”
42 here and I have that album, got the pun right away.
Loved the clip with Iggy Pop and Bowie. She was so clearly crushing on Bowie!
And let’s not forget this gem from the old Hudson Brothers’ Saturday morning show:
- Will you be eating on board the ship or are you going to Dinah Shore?*
