Is this the worst costume ever? Dressing as 9/11

Teens dress up in offensive costume. People offended. Pope catholic. News at 15. Meh.

“The idea was to depict a modern-day horror that happened in our lifetime and was not intended as a joke.”

Next Halloween they can depict a modern-day horror that happened in their parents’ lifetime, and dress up as Ian Brady and Myra Hindley.

Uruguayan. Although there were similar rumors about Idi Amin… om nom nom.

Now excuse me, I’ve got a flight to catch to Austria so I can see the kangaroos (at the Vienna Zoo!)

Tacky, yes, but I believe that 10 years is not “too soon.” It certainly was not more tragic than other similar events in history, but some think so. I don’t feel offended, and do somewhat admire the audacity, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t roll my eyes.

A friend of mine went to a party as JonBenet Ramsey on me year. Another as Lacey Peterson (covered in kelp and carrying a dead baby.)

Those alone make me think these gals are probably nowhere near “worst ever” status.

Surely this is just the real world equivalent of trolling?

And we all know that what trolls want most in their lives is attention.

Tasteless, offensive, and not funny.

I laughed.

The damned thing is, I looked up the proper spelling of Uruguayan, and still messed it up!

I don’t understand offense, because I’m pretty sure I’ve never been offended.

Everything mentioned in this thread seems like a pretty clever, well executed costume to me. Certainly better than what I came up with this year.

Wonderful. Sexy World Trade Center Buildings. And I thought Sexy Chinese Takeout was the nadir of sexy Halloween costumes.

That’s like the least offensive one on whatever list of racist costumes. Stupid, but then there’s stupider.

Did you say Myra Hindley?

(and apparently the couples thing has been done too)

I don’t like this. 9/11 was terrible. But the girls look kinda cute, even though their costumes are terrible!

It’s bad that they dressed up as 9/11, but worse that they actually won a prize. And the worst thing is that it was a valuable (monetary) prize.

To be honest I’m more offended by just how horribly-designed those “costumes” - and I use that word lightly - were. They don’t look like the twin towers at all. I mean jeez, they couldn’t have at least attempted to make them square-shaped instead of round, or decorated them to have the correct color? They just look like two round buildings.

Drunk skanks.

You have to remember that those girls were only about 7 so won’t appreciate the full horror of 9-11.
I can see how it is tasteless and offensive to some but I have to hope that beyond the opprobrium of twitter and a stern word from dad, nothing particularly bad happens to them.
I suspect they’ll be a little more thoughtful in their costume choice in future…or not of course, in which case I still support their freedom of expression but suspect they’ll find life a little more of a challenge than it need be. c’est la vie.

Same here.

That would be ignorance on your part, which, since you post to this board, you’d think you’d want to remedy.

Even if you’ve personally never felt offended, it’s a good idea for interacting with society to figure out what other people would be offended by. I don’t know about these girls, but the Zimmerman/Martin and Boston bombing people got freaking death threats. And while none of those were apparently crazy enough to carry it out, you never know.

And, of course, that’s just the worst possible scenario, which I included to drive things home. Social ostracism is a more common problem. You should always be aware of how others around you think, even if you disagree.

I mean, people who don’t understand this are made fun of at the same level as people who do bath salts and go naked crazy (Regular crazy, like running into car windshields, but while naked.)

That right there, for those who don’t get it, is exactly where they went wrong. Halloween costumes are always jokes. You can’t depict a modern-day horror with them. The horrors have to not seem real, because of point of a halloween costume is to make fun. It’s not like anyone who wears a zombie costume believes there will really be zombies.

Halloween is a holiday about making fun of the macabre and the scary. It is a jovial holiday, not one about bringing up real life tragedies.
