I don’t think he stepped down. He’s still my senator.
He didn’t have to resign unless he won, like McCain in '08. Probably would have been different if he was actually up for re-election.

Depends on the state law, doesn’t it? Connecticut law allowed Joe Lieberman to run simultaneously for VP and Senate in 2000.
I’m sure it does matter but I doubt there’s a rule about someone mid-term having to resign to run for a higher office. Regardless, he’s still on the official Senate webpage for Virginia.
