Is Today Show on NBC "LIVE" from Sydney?

I live in Toronto and just watched the opening ceremonies from Sydney live which started at about 4am est(eastern standard time) since Australia is 15 hours ahead of us. I like watching the Today Show on NBC occasionally and switched to it just after the ceremonies.
I was suprised to see that it was daylight in Sydney although I know since it is 15 hours ahead of us it was actually 11:30pm at night?
And they kept saying on the “live” show from there that the opening ceremonies would be on tonight Friday night, but just a sec they were on this morning Friday morning “LIVE”? Is NBC trying to fool the American people?
So if the Tday show is actually on tape when was it made? Friday morning in Australia or Thurday morning or when?
Just curious…
Does anyone really know?

I am posting this from Melbourne. It is a minute past midnight on Saturday morning. It appears to be dark.

Katie and Matt said this morning on the “Today” show that all week their shows have been taped, but that next week, they would be “live.”

YMMV, but I’m pretty sure that I saw one scene this morning where the sky was black, and the word “LIVE” was on the top left corner of the screen.

I think they’re mixing live and taped shots just to confuse us.

They are keeping guard in case someone flashes them again. I have the link if you want it.

that kinda answers my question.

On another note I think some of their interviews are pre-taped. I watched the Today Show once and they had some guy in a suit speaking to them. Turn on to ABC’s Good Morning America 10-15 minutes later and there’s the exact same guy, wearing the same clothes, talking about the same thing. I suspect it takes more then 10-15 minutes to get from NBC to ABC but I admit I could be mistaken.

Uhhh… Oblong. Mind giving a link or E-Mailing it to me.

I have a nice one of the Olymipic torch run with some drunk guys in the background doing some lewd things on their roof.

Many parts of the morning TV shows are taped ahead of time. Not everybody likes to get up at 5 am to be on TV.

Sometimes they are identified as being taped. Some aren’t because they were probably taped the same day and they figure that no one will mind.

Since I live on the West Coast, there is no such thing as live network news.

And even though we’re closer to Sydney than the East Coast, we get to watch the Olympics on an even more delayed basis.

I think the Today show was trying to pull a fast one.

The above link does really explain it all in clear english too bad NBC try to con everyone, but it didn’t get by the teeming millions.

It’s a pretty sorry situation where the morning paper has the results before we get to see the events on tv that evening.

Personally, I don’t plan on watching any of the Olympics. Not just because of the delay, but I’ve seen enough women’s gynastics to last me a life time. To say nothing of the up-close-and-personals…

And for the record this disc-jockey show prep from Associated Press:

TONIGHT’S TV
The Olympics continue on N-B-C. Tonight, look for highlights from gymnastics, swimming, weight-lifting and the triathlon. All the events happened earlier and have been taped for airing during prime-time.

According to TV Guide Magazine, pretty well all of the NBC coverage will be tape-delayed so that they can hit the prime-time audience. They also quoted NBC as saying that viewers weren’t really interested in the “who won” aspects of their coverage, but in knowing the story behind the story - thus, more athlete profiles and backgrounders. Yeah, sure - I long to know more about the home life of a pole vaulter. Maybe this “reality TV” thing is going a bit too far??

The CBC (Canadian government TV) IS showing live coverage - starting at around 11:30 pm Eastern and running daily to about 8:00 am, then repeated in the evening for the prime-time viewers. So if you really, really want to see live coverage of women’s gymnastics, and if you live in the Northern states where you could receive Canadian coverage, be prepared to stay up all night.

If I’m not mistaken, the 3 networks’ broadcasting stations for the morning shows are spitting distance from each other in NYC. That is why celebrities on press tours can just hop from one to another (especially those on tight schedules). I can’t be specific about my NYC geography, I’m afraid, but I do know I’ve read more than once stories about the crowds that hang out in front of each of the respective big windows and for concerts sponsored by the programs and such.

As for “Today”, ever since the Olympics started, they have been repeating ad nauseum that they are 15 hours ahead of EST and 18 PST, and it’s always been very obviously nighttime (they even remind people that most venues have been emptying after the last events just around when they have been broadcasting).

So for those of us on the West Coast, it’s still taped, but it is live EST.

Although the networks are indeed located closeby, many times interviews like that take place via satellite hookups. Then they will go on Today, GMA, even the CBS show that no one watches. It’s interesting to see the same person, wearing the same clothes, sitting in the same hotel room or TV station answering the same lame questions only on different news shows.

Local stations also take advantage of interviews such as this to get a live interview with a celebrity. The famous celebrity will plant their butt in a hotel room for a couple hours, and local stations will interview them via satellite for rebroadcast on tonight’s “Live at 5” show or whatever cheesy newscast they have.

Yesterday, ABC’s Good Morning America really blasted NBC’s Olympic coverage. They pointed out that CBC is broadcasting live to the same time zones that NBC serves. CBC’s ratings have been spectacular while NBC’s are lackluster. The GMA team implied that the tape-delay business is turning off viewers.

My wife, on the other hand, thinks it’s NBC’s poor program. She just wants to watch the events, but NBC is too busy giving little stories aobut things like how an Australian saved John F. Kennedy’s life in WWII.

Yes it is true we are not amused or fooled.
But it is great here in Canada since CBC carries the events “LIVE” late at night all thru the night so if you can get CBC on your TV be sure to tune in at 11:30 pm and you can watch coverage all night but it is Canadian events and athletes.
