Is Twilight Mysogynistic? [SPOILERS]

Does anyone else have a mental picture of that PSA where the guys dressed up as a cellphone constantly IMing and calling his girlfriend? Maybe they should have one featuring Edward!
You know…maybe the Twillight books are popular in the same way the Flowers in the Attic/VC Andrews books are popular. Its basicly popular because its uberdramatic soap opera crap.

Lamia, I get what you’re saying. In the unlikely event I ever have a tween daughter I would definitely go over the books and make it clear that while they’re a fun fantasy, in real life she needs to find her own identity apart from being someone’s love interest, and to avoid relationships with creepy stalkers, no matter how good looking or charming. But I’d also tell my hypothetical tween son that while it’s fun to watch action-man mow down scores of bad guys, in real life violence is horrible and only allowed as a last resort.

Someone should at least do a parody. I would laugh so hard if I saw that.

I have no doubt that some people enjoy the books for just that reason, but it doesn’t take long on the Web to find girls saying that they love the Edward character and dream of meeting a guy just like him, or even saying that they despair of ever finding love because no real guy could live up to the perfection that is Edward. Some talk mostly about how hot he is, so their crush may actually be on actor Robert Pattinson. But others say they love the way Edward respects and protects Bella, which I find disturbing since he actually behaves like an emotionally abusive stalker.
