Those are last names. Unless I’m misinterpreting, Chronos was asking about first names.
Yes, it looks like that’s what he’s saying. Not sure what that’s based on.
My last name was Dem -12, which surprised me maybe a bit, its a pretty solid English name that I would mostly associate with white people, but according to this site, a bit over 27% of the people with my name are black.
First name which is pretty traditional is +6 Republican but that may just be a gender bias. I note that all of the top male names are positive Republican, and most of the top female names lean Dem.
My last name as spelled is +1 Republican, but an alternate spelling with the same pronunciation is +47 Democrat.
My first name is +16 Republican.
My full name includes two middle names and a “the third” and makes me look like some sort of New England Old Money aristocrat, who I assume votes for whichever candidate is cheaper for him to buy.
Ah, indeed, that’s it. That clears that up.
my #1 danish last name is 29 republican. the majority of people with my last name would be in nebraska and iowa.
My last name doesn’t appear in the table at all. Too rare, I guess.
Both are pretty solidly red. My first name isn’t exactly popular but not retro enough to be trendy. I suppose that means it trends older. My last name is sort of the same. A not overly common but not unusual Germanic name.
Thanks for that. Apparently my first and last names cancel each other out.
Hey, with my German-sounding name, I lean Nazi…
I was using Chrome and had no issues at all.
Yeah, my mother’s maiden name is rare, and I never find it. But my dad’s last name (and mine) is bog (literally) standard.
I assume it’s an extension, but I tried in Incognito mode, which I believe turns them off, and it was still a mess for me. I’m on MacOS, and I doubt most users have the same problem. It’s probably something idiosyncratic to me.
Yeah, I just wanted to mention it in case someone with vanilla Chrome, like me, thought they needed to open a new browser.
My first name leans blue, my last name leans red.
The only way I can access the article is to register, which I’m not gonna.
But as for the quote, the "Donald"s I can think of offhand are Trump, Rumsfeld, and Duck. The first two are the epitome of Republicanism, the last one, being likewise not very bright, is very likely the same.
But there’s always an exception. The late Canadian actor Donald Sutherland was definitely a liberal outlier. He even managed to get himself on a CIA watchlist for his anti-war activities, and was married to the daughter of Tommy Douglas, often called “the Greatest Canadian” for his role in bringing universal health care to Canada. So much for names giving away your politics! ![]()
It turns out that I registered a while ago using my “spam honeypot” email account, so I was able to read it using that.
I don’t think I’ve ever registered for the WaPo, but it let me in no problem.
WaPo may treat Canucks differently. I’ll gift link it if you think it important or many have the same problem. But these gift links seem now not to provide access to many people, nor for indefinite time periods.
Interesting. My name leans Republican, and the name it evolved from is even more so. But a variation with a single letter difference leans far more Democratic. And this includes the older version of it.
My last name splits right down the middle, and first name is only 1 point to the blue side of the line.
It explains why I’m a radical centrist.
