ISIS--you're going down

Clearly, a little ethnic cleansing is in order.

I give up. You appear to have no knowledge of history or understanding of things.

Why would the Kurds and Shia fight?

Kirkuk for one. Because the Shia don’t want kurdish independence for another.

Ancient grudges, modern grudges. The Kurds being largely Sunni and therefore heretics. Because Iran and Saudi will stir things. Because it’s the Middle East and the concept of ‘live and let live’ hasn’t made it there yet.

Man, I wish i lived in your world. I could do with a rainbow farting unicorn.

Is there any historical enmity between the Kurds and Iraq’s Shias? Any at all?

Yea. Sunni and Shia don’t get on.

Yea - Kurds want independence and the Shia don’t want them to have it. No one has ever wanted kurds to be independent.

Yea. Kurds claim Kirkuk. Everyone claims Kirkuk.

And in the wider sense the Kurds have always been viciously repressed in that region by everyone.

Besides, this is the Middle East. Every side is one massacre away from an endless damn feud.

There is not a chance of Iraq splitting up peacefully. It’ll continue being what it is now - another proxy battleground for Iran and Saudi to fight while the Americans blunder around making everything even worse.

Great - you finally quoted someone intelligent!

You’re really not paying the least bit of attention, are you?

This being the Middle East I’m sure it’ll all happen in a brotherly, non-violent spirit that won’t in any way lead to generations of hatred and violence.

It’s not just an appearance.

Oh, absolutely. You have made a giant ass of yourself, as have all the other braying jackasses who piled on in this thread, because not a goddam one of you bothered to read what I posted for comprehension. You just saw it was from me and the shit started to fly like a swarm of mosquitoes.

But then, that is typical for the SDMB these days.

What have we not comprehended about (A) your claim that the ISIS matter is intimately related to the Gaza situation, or (B) your use of an ethnic slur?

Maybe it’s time for you to get a new career that doesn’t involve getting kicked in the head all day. Just a thought.

Wow. Just, wow.

I think I’m actually a little worried about you.

ETA: nope, not at all. I despise you. The SDMB would better off without you. Unless we’re looking for a village idiot, that is.

You’re an angry, delusional man and you have a cartoonish understanding of the issues involved.

You’re a victim of people selling you an alternate version of recent history, so that you’ll line up like a good, ignorant, sheep and click the box that is marked ‘R’ even though it makes your shitty little life worse with every election.

Terrorists should die.
Indeed.

Agreed.

Anyway, gleaned from the news:

-We now have over 1000 troops back in Iraq, up from zero a few months ago. It has been 59 days since the first Presidential notification to Congress that we are deploying troops. Under the War Powers Act, Congress needs to approve military action within 60 days. But Congress is on vacation and doesn’t look like they’re coming back, which will result in definitive proof of Obama’s lawlessness.

-We have an airbase set up in Northern Iraq (probably in ‘Kurdistan’), so we don’t have to launch every plane from aircraft carriers anymore. Apparently airstrikes are ramping up, but I don’t know for sure. Other countries have airlifted Yazidis off that mountain via helicopter already. The US is sending in tilt-rotor Chinooks to (maybe) help with that. The rescue is underway.

-The latest notification to Congress of troop deployment didn’t specify a limit to how many troops would be sent, unlike all the previous notifications. Therefore, maybe we might send the entire Army back to Iraq?

The rescue appears to have been called off as people are escaping on their own. i’d put money on ISIS withdrawing back into Syria leaving their local allies - eg the ordinary Sunni tribes who need to be bought back on board and so cannot be attacked - in control of the Sunni areas they occupied.

Of course they’ll leave a shadow organisation in place but you can’t really bomb shadows.

That’s fine. Shadows can’t conquer nations either.

No - but they can still kill a lot of people and they can keep effective control of a territory through their proxies. Worked in Vietnam.

There is no ‘Iraqi nation’ by the way.

Vietnam was conquered by an army. The North Vietnamese Army specifically. Since our goal is not to eradicate terrorists from the Sunni Triangle, but to prevent an army from conquering Kurdish areas and Baghdad, we’re in good shape. We know how to do that and we’re the best in the world at it.

You’re especially good at fucking things up beyond repair, helping everyone in even deeper shit, yes.

Of course.

In spite of the inaccurate languages used, the Kurds are in fact **most of the Sunni **rites, mostly the hanbali I think, and before the emergence of the arabist ideology of the Baath, the Kurds were among the backbones of the Sunni supremacy. Only arab supremacism drove them away.

The arab shia know this history quite well. The Westerners who like to intervene and make grand statements on little knowledge do not know it, but the shia do.
