You’re welcome.
This is fascinating. I never would have guessed the males shave their delicate bits. Is that all they shave? Would they shave their chests, armpits, backs, etc.? Hey, curious minds want to know.
No just the legpit, the armpts go wild and wooly.
The Don Johnson Miami Vice stubble fashion trend circa 1985 was maintained by specially designed electric razors that trimmed the beard to about 1mm.
They shave armpit hair and pubic hair. So what? So do a lot of Americans.
No they do not shave armpits, only legpits.
Actually, if I recall correctly, removing the armpit hair is part of the fitrah (the Islamic rules for good grooming, such as circumcision, trimming hair, growing the beard, brushing the teeth, etc.) This doesn’t mean that all Muslims shave their pits, of course, but I’d bet that a significant portion of them do.
Lissla Lissar, do the women just wear lingerie under their burqas? I thought the burga was to be worn over their regular clothing while the women were in public. After they got to their destination, they took off the burqas and just wore their regular clothes.
Paul in Saudi, have you considered asking the men if they shave or wax? Or would they punch you? (kidding)
No, they might tell me more than I care to know. Sorry, the men don’t shave their pits, even if they really oughta.
Women generally wear regular clothes under their robe, but on at least some ocassions they don’t bother. Accidents happen. These events live forever in our story telling over here.
Practising Muslim checking in…
Yes, Muslims are required to trim underarm and pubic hair as part of the religious requirements for personal hygiene and cleanliness. This extends to keeping clothes as clean and in as good repair as possible, brushing regularly, etc… Not everyone does, but they should. And believe me, some of them really should! So yes, I trim my armpits regularly, and yes, I have trimmed (ahem) “the rest” on occaision. It was certainly…intersesting (if a bit breezy), but I can’t say it’s something I’ll be doing often.
As for beards, I currently sport a neat little goatee, (of which I am quite proud, thank you very much) and have done for the past five or six years. Coupled with a neatly shaved dome, for that “Mr Clean” look, I think I look quite good…
I’m not eaxctly sure what the ruling is on beards, but most, if not all, of the respected scholars seem to wear them. To be honest, most muslims see it as a trivial matter - and is certainly no indication of an individual’s piety. What counts is ones words and actions and intentions…
Well, this has been a very interesting thread. I’ve learned something new. However, I just can’t help thinking that muslim women got a raw deal, having to wear burqas in such a hot climate. The summer weather in the D.C. area is so hot and humid, I’d pass out of heatstroke if I had to wear a burqa over my regular clothes.
Some burqas are very light. religious ladies wear heaviier ones, sometimes with long black gloves.
I understood from said dance teacher that the ladies do wear clothes over their scary lingere, but felt a need to flash it whenever she was alone with a bunch of them.
Back in the late Eighties, I think, she hired a very famous bellydancer (can’t remember which one- this is very anecdotal) to come and teach for a while. She was getting on, and a bit heavy. The lady in question brought a number of thong leotards, because she was under the impression that they were the only de riguer thing to wear while exercising.
Actually, living here, the heat is so intense that thicker fabrics actually give you more protection, because they absorb more of it and shield your skin better. It’s like wearing layers to keep warm, but in reverse. What you need is the biggest and best barrier between your skin and the weather (in this case extreme heat).
Wearing thinner clothes to “let the air in” or “let your skin breathe” actually doesn’t work, because the air is just so damn hot!
Damascene - by “trim” the hair, does that mean shave totally or just snip a bit? What is the exact word and its meaning in the Qaran?
