I’ve started getting an error popup when I connect online that states “Your ISP does not support call waiting” and asks me to click yes or no to accept the incoming call. I am then booted offline and have to re-connect.
I do not have call waiting on that line. So far, in order to fix this I have reinstalled the OS from disk and had the modem replaced. I also replaced my phone jack and it still happens.
It’s a HP laptop, running on Windows XP. The modem is an ESS Smartlink model. I’ve already checked the dialing settings. My ISP (MSN) says it’s the modem and the place I bought it from (who replaced the modem) say it’s the phone line because they “can’t recreate the error”. Phone company told me the line is fine - and with the new jack, I get a good dial tone.
Does anyone know what I can do to make this stop?
It is a feature of V92 modems; it sounds like yours is misinterpreting something else as the incoming call signal.
I don’t know for sure, but you could try digging about in the modem driver properties to see if there’s an option to turn off the hold on incoming call feature.
To get to the modem properties dialog, click Start>Settings>Control Panel>System>device Manager
Then click on the little + next to ‘Modems’, then right-click the entry for your modem and click ‘Properties’ - there may be some option in there to disable the feature…
You can turn off call waiting on a call by call basis. The exact code may differ by area, but I believe *71 is now almost universal.
Put *71 in the box labelled (roughly) “Dial ____ to get an outside line” [usually used for “dial 9”] and your laptop will turn off callwaiting every time it makes a call. When the call ends, Call waiting will be restored.
I think you can set up the dialling properties of your computer so that before dialling your ISP, it sends the code to disable call waiting, then sends another code to re-enable it on disconnecting (whcih only works if you disconnect normally - a system crash would leave call waiting turned off).
In PA, the code to disable call waiting is *70, which I thought was universal. If you don’t have call waiting on the line, that will give you a fast busy, however.
When the call is over, call waiting is automatically re-enabled. You do not have to worry about the pc crashing. It will always be re-enabled for your next call.
However, that error your getting does not sound like anything that is pre-installed into any Windows OS. What program is pulling that up. Do you install Callwave or any modem software when you reinstall? When you reinstall, do you install all of the HP software, or just Windows XP?
Ok, so the modem is V92 and you do not have call waiting but the modem thinks a call is coming in. Probably it is due to noise or interruptions on the line which make the modem lose the carrier for a fraction of a second. There are several things you might look into and fiddle with. i would try them one by one, separately. You will need the specific AT commands for your modem.
Force the modem to connect on V90 and not V92. +MS command
Increase the carrier detect loss disconnect delay time which is generally register S10. Increase the value and see if it helps.
Program the modem to ignore the carrier detect control line altogether and pretend it is always on. &C0 command
Is there any thing else on the phone line going into your computer? Another phone on the same line?
I looked online for a manual and couldn’t find one. If you email me the default settings I’ll take a look and see if I can figure it out.
To ge the settings do this:
Start -> Settings ->control panels ->modem. Click on the diagnostic tab, highlight the com port your modem is on and hit the more info button. (I am not on an XP machine so this might be a little off, doing it from memory) You should get a screen with a bunch of information on it. Just cut and paste it and send it to me in an email.
