It gets weirder

So, I posted this last week.

Essestially, it’s about a strange phone call I received – the caller left a message via a collect call message system to a woman’s name saying he had tested positive for HIV and that he was trying to tell (Mr. Cookie’s name). The person who left a message gave an email address.

I reported the phone number (the collect call place) to my phone company and didn’t think anything more of it. (Other than Mr. Cookie and I scratching our heads, going WTF?)

Yesterday, we get a handwritten letter, in a handwritten envelope, from a state no where near us, that says essentially what the call said. It was addressed to my husband (although using a form of his name that isn’t normally used) and essentially said “If you know (woman’s name who is clearly his ex-wife or wife from the last names) and you’ve slept with her you might have HIV because I might have it because of an ex-girlfriend” and then ends by telling the ex-wife or wife to die and rot in hell. It’s from a P.O. Box and again, at the end, says “write me back.”

It’s also not exactly impressive handwriting or sentence structure, if you know what I mean.

Now, if taken at face value, it appears to be an angry ex who is trying to get back at his ex by “alerting” his ex’s new main squeeze of “her” health issue or some such.

Neither Mr. Cookie nor I have ever heard of these people and are assuming it’s a mistaken identity thing. We called the police – pretty much because of the threat at the end – they came over and looked at the letter and advised us to just ignore anything else.

We’re just baffled and have thought up a million theories from mistaken identity to scam to someone we know is really evil and doing this.

Any thoughts?

My thoughts? That* is* really weird. Sorry, nothing constructive to add. I’d take the advise given by the police, but I’d be really curious to find out who this person is.

The most important thing: Get test now, both of you, now. ATLEAST RULE THAT OUT!

Totally and completely ruled out.

Good to hear. Definitely a weird situation.

What was the threat at the end?

Whatever you do, do NOT travel to Nigeria to transfer millions of retroviruses out of a swiss bank account, thinking you’ll get to keeping 20% for yourself.

It never works out that way.
