I’m puzzled by your assumption that atheists seek to maintain “relevance.” Really, it’s not complicated. There are no gods. Atheists realize this. End of story. We’re not trying to accomplish anything (as a group). It’s as if there was a name for people who don’t believe the room disappears when the light is turned off. It doesn’t tell you anything about us except we don’t buy into a common myth. There are pro life atheists, pro choice atheists, smart atheist, not so smart atheists, liberals, apoliticals, etc., etc.

This is a valid position to take, but it’s likely that atheists will continue to be marginalized.

When I begin to listen to an atheist’s argument, you need to assume that I already know that you do not believe in God. But for some reason I’m still listening…well, I’m waiting for the coherent philosophy that comes afterwards. If it doesn’t come, then I stop listening.

Pope Benedict resigning and the heavily publicized molestation cases against priests have not helped. Perhaps the Priests that did the initial molestation were simply sick individuals. But the Priests that covered up the investigations they are far worse in my opinion. They had an obligation to protect family and children that went to their church. It’s very hard to forgive this type of conduct. But the church I go to still has 4 masses on Sunday and a large and wealthy congregation.

I’m sure you don’t feel marginalized. You are a mature individual that is sure in your values.

In a way, I’m talking about political power and clout. When an atheist is treated in the same way and manner as blacks, latinos, and women are in CA, in my mind that is a worthy aspiration.

When I make an argument that gets a lot of responses, my inclination is to believe that I made a rational argument and people are responding because they are coming from different premises and want to draw a different conclusion than mine.

I wasn’t particularly asking you, nor do I care whether you care what I think. You have put yourself forth as a lawyer, and there is some question as to whether that is true. It’s not unreasonable to ask for some verification, either from you or from others who claim that you are not a lawyer.

I’m also not sure what this religious side argument has to do with anything. So, I’ll ask, “Are you licensed to practice law in your home state?” If you don’t want to answer, or say “Yes” then I would ask any other poster why he or she doesn’t believe you are licensed to practice law in your home state. It’s really a simple question.

Nope, I’m defining and using the word the way you do.

But my definition really isn’t that crazy. It’s pretty much the way a Court decides a controversial issue. There’s the majority opinion and a minority opinion. Sometimes there are 3 types of opinions. And the amazing thing is the individual judges are looking at the same case law and statutes.

The scariest part of the profession is you really don’t have to be that good to make a lot of money. But you do have to have the right clients. If you don’t have the right clients, it doesn’t matter how good your legal skills are you might end up just scrapping by.
