In fairness, we do have more restaurant choices 'cause we’re allowed to eat whatever we like.
Doesn’t matter because you atheists can’t make up your minds on which one to go to. You just stand around arguing with yourselves until you all die of starvation.
Keep yelling that loudly, and you’ll get a little hoarse!
I don’t believe in the tooth fairy. Should I be organizing?
You don’t need to be an atheist to be upset at the current situation, I don’t know of any people at my church that isn’t.
I hate the pedophile priests, however, they might be sick. I hate the priests that are protecting the pedophile priests even more. They have absolutely no excuses. They have an absolute responsibility to turn over the pedophiles irregardless of whether public international law protects them.
Why not? You’ve got nothing to lose but the quarter under your pillow.
Too bad. Wrong troll.
With all respect to Marley’s judgment that pchaos is not a troll, this is not an OP which could be made in good faith by either a Christian (of any variety, but in particular by a Catholic) or a lawyer. A Christian would be alert to the significance of solemn vows undertaken by two people before God; a lawyer would be alert to the importance of marriage in our legal system, and the consequences of an ill-thought-out proposal to remove legal recognition from the concept of marriage. I can only conclude that it is the work of a person who advocates a controversial position he/she does not him/herself hold, for the purposes of stirring up argument – the definition of trolling.
I don’t see that OP as necessarily trollish. He’s asking what the consequences would be, not necessarily advocating for a position. It’s probably his least idiotic post, in fact.

Stirring up an argument is fine. You’re allowed to play devil’s advocate and make an argument you don’t personally believe for one reason or another. What you can’t do is say things you don’t believe just to annoy people. pchaos has been dinged a few times for doing that and he was warned for it in the other thread he started today. So for his own sake he shouldn’t do it again in the marriage thread, but for now I think he’ll get a small benefit of the doubt. (Further discussion about modding goes in ATMB, etc. etc. etc.)

Guys, I’m happily married and would never think of changing my relationship. I just thought it would be an interesting topic because CA like many states have just had a horrible time dealing with the Gay marriage issue. Also, divorces are taking up a lot of the scarce resources of our state courts. In San Jose, divorce cases are 25% of the Superior Court’s docket.

I didn’t say anything about your relationship. Let me know if you get around to responding to anything I did say.

I’m sorry, but half the time when I’m online I’m multi-tasking, but I have a better feel for forum rules now and I’ll try and behave. I know you think of my posts as being somewhat repetitive, I’ll try and avoid that.
You could post much less and say much more, and I am not talking about the length of your posts.

Look out your window: When you can’t see a blue moon at midday for the flying pigs, you’ll know he responded directly to your post.

Why not post this where you started the topic of marriage in the first place?

And why do you think states are having a horrible time with the ‘gay marriage issue’ ? who is causing the problem(s)? why are they (what is their drivng ideology) ?

LOL! I’m still half following the thread for the minimal entertainment value but the fact that everyone seems to just let pchaos slough off any post he wants to, which seems to be about 90% of them, makes this a pretty boring thread.

Give me the post no. and I’ll respond.
But on the issue of atheists having something to offer. I’ll give you a real world example. When I got out of law school, I ignored most of the law firms that were looking for new attorneys and just applied to the law firms I was interested in working for.
I think people do the same when they decide on a church or a community group to join. If they’re satisfied with the family church they’ll stay there, if not they’ll check out some other groups.
When you’re looking for a firm, the prestige of the firm is important. So irregardless of whether they’re looking for an attorney or not some firms always get applicants. It’s the same with different religious groups. For instance a good Episcopalian church in New York would probably have little trouble getting new members. Whether or not atheists like it or not they are going to be thrown into this market.

IF ‘church’ == social club - sure - maybe - but by and large your analogy does not hold.
People switch churches based (generally) on a disagreement over some part of the dogma or because they find one that more closely matches their preferred beliefs (hell, trinity, etc). They also switch or join based on proximity or ‘liking the preacher’ - but I would say those that join strictly for ‘prestige’ are a minority.
and again - Atheists are not trying to ‘build a membership’ in he same manner - its not a ‘substitute’ or a ‘social club’ - if you ever get that thru your thick head, it might make sense to you.
