IT techies..help me pick out a new place to venture!

As a tech, I have been progressing along at a rapid pace to try to keep up with the market as such and now feel I am at a crossroads. I got a lot of things I NEED to learn and am wondering what you guys may suggest for stability in the coming job market.

What I mean is, if you had a choice to learn something in languages or computer related field, what would you shoot for? And where would you go?

Specifically I am looking for those techs out there that can suggest a good field, tell me why, and give me a stepping stone to learning.

I can book learn but like classes and am thinking maybe UNIX but am unsure where to start.

And it serves as a great jumping off point for any number of future pusuits (performance tuning, perl scripting, SAN implementation, HA design, systems architecting, etc . . ) There is a lot of demand for Unix folks, still, and I don’t see much evidence that critical business processes are jumping to NT/Win2K in large numbers. Plus, linux offers a great future opportunity for the “small company” market.

Of course, if I had to do it all over again I would probably go into high-end computer animation.
