It was the third of September

A day I’ll always remember

'Cause that was the day

That my Daddy died.

I never got a chance to see him

Never heard nothin’ but bad things about him.

Mamma, I’m depending on you to tell me the truth!

Momma just hung her head and said, son

Papa was a rollin’ stone

Where ever he laid his was his home

And when he died

All he left us was alone

(one of the greatest lines in pop history)

When I was a kid, I always heard this as “All he left us was a loan”
Never made any sense to me

Papa was a rolling stone (my son, yeah)
.
.
.
.
.
(I always though another line was “wherever he led us that was his home”)

I think it’s “Wherever he laid his hat was his home”, which is also a great line.

But this was inter-Motown self-plagiarism/inspiration from Marvin Gaye’s “Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home)”.

ETA: I just see after googling that Norman Whitfield, Motown staff writer and producer, was involved in writing both songs. Maybe it was his line.

Hey, Mama, is it true what they say, that Papa never worked a day in his life?

And Mama:

Some bad talk going 'round town saying that Papa had three outside children and another wife.

Pass the biscuits, please.

Beware the third day of the month!
