When I was in Italy I had pomodoro(tomato) everything. I ate strawberries for the first time too, which were great, and zuchinni finally tasted good. When I got back to U.S., though, I found that tomatoes just tasted like water, zuchinni was nasty again, and strawberries tasted like bitter poison. Why the difference in taste? Is it because most of Italy’s produce is organic? If I buy organic produce here, will I be sated again? Or is the soil just “better” over there.
What the heck–let’s throw caution to the wind and buy some organic food!
Soil does make a difference , especially with root vegetables, but what you are probably tasting with commercial tomatoes and zucchini here in the states is a variety of vegetable that has been bred for durability, uniformity, and yield–not taste.
Corporate organic food can taste vile for the same reason, but generally organic growers use varieties bred for flavor because they know that people expect more from organics. Usually your local grower at a farmer’s market has also made a choice for varieties bred to taste.
