Got an itouch 4th generation that is 3 years old. Battery runs out very fast. Are the only 2 options going to the apple store and have them replace the battery which is going to cost $80+ tax or so or buy one of those batteries on ebay and then install it yourself? I see these on ebay but no way i can do this b/c i will probably break the itouch.
Are there ppl/services that don’t charge as much as apple for these services? And if so how much? Do those places have itouch batteries and then they do everything or would you have to buy the battery and have the stuff and then they would put the new battery in? And does anyone know how long it takes approximately to take out old battery and put new one?
Anyone know a place in montreal for this?
Any phone/gadget repair shop will probably do it. I had the battery replaced in an old iPhone for about $40 parts and labour. Edit: and yes, they should have the battery too.
Mail is slow. Service is otherwise good. Prices are great. Quality is good. Easy.
I checked online and i see one site that does it for 70 dollars in montreal. Is that about right then? I guess its more in canada then the usa since you paid 40 dollars for an old iphone?
I’m in Australia, which is usually more expensive. Maybe I got lucky.
I put a battery in my iPhone 3G twice.
I bought a battery on line from eBay. Did the change using online instructions.
It was a colossal pain, very difficult and I think I can say that I have above average manual dexterity.
The battery I bought turned out to be a piece of crap. I bought another one.
In doing the second replacement I somehow killed the unit.
My advice?
Go get it done by a professional. The downside risk is very high.
If you considering paying seventy bucks to some random company to do it, Apple Canada will replace the battery for $79 plus $10.77 shipping (and tax).
And also note that the device is called an iPod Touch, not an iTouch.
I just had the battery replaced on my 3rd generation iPod Touch at a local shop. Cost: $55 plus tax. The shop had it ready in less than two hours.
Rick’s comments notwithstanding, I think 70 bucks is a bit steep. If you think that you can manage opening the case, you should be able to do it for a lot cheaper.
Got another question. How many different types of batteries are there? Would it be possible to buy the battery with the longest battery life compared to the regular one? Or are all battery replacements the same for the ipod touch?
They gotta fit – both a physical fit and a fit in their electrical specifications. I would only go for something that says it is made to fit your model of device.
Some may then tell you how much charge they are capable of holding – measured in milli amp hours for phone batteries. I don’t know how reliable the quoted numbers are: it would depend to some extent on the testing methods used. However, in general, if you are comparing two different batteries, the higher the better.
The third thing to consider is longevity. You really will have no way of knowing this in advance since it will depend on usage and your charging cycles as well as the battery. Reading feedback from customers is probably your best bet.
The thing I like about dx is free delivery. I really don’t know how they do it. I know it is absorbed into the cost somewhere but I have bought items for a couple of bucks that have been shipped half way around the globe.
Replacing a 4th gen iPod Touch battery is probably outside the abilities of most people.
The battery replacement guide at iFixItsays it’s very difficult and involves soldering. It also requires a heat gun to soften the adhesives that hold the device together, and there are very delicate non-detachable cables to be careful with.
I read through the directions, and they’re insane. 28 major steps, and a lot of tiny, delicate things to take apart…
If Apple will do it for $80, I’d give the job to them in a heartbeat. There’s actually a fair chance they’ll just swap it for a reconditioned iPod.
I have a 4th gen iPod that I have opened up twice, I replaced the screen and front camera, and the battery myself. While successful both times, I realized a pro could do it faster and alot neater than my handiwork.
When I cracked the screen again, I took it to an independent shop and had it repaired for about $90 with a new case. It’s pretty well new again and it took less than a day.
Search your local classifieds and/or Kijiji and you’ll find lots of repair people. I only recommend shops, not people who will meet you on the street, etc…
