You’re going to need to expound on the meaning of your reply.
I’m certainly not saying that atheists are as discriminated against TODAY as many other groups. I’m hoping that by 2050 everyone else in front of us is taken care of and it could be our turn.
The mentally ill. Right now they are ignored and ridiculed, blamed for their behavior, left to roam the streets and fend for themselves, and they have to deal with a level of police violence that would make a black person gasp in horror. half of all police killings are of mentally ill people. I know several mentally ill people (and am one myself) who has been a victim of police violence.
On top of that the only time society mentions them is when one of them becomes violent.
I’m going to guess that the big civil rights struggle in 2050 is going to be for black folks. Yeah, yeah, that’s nothing new… but if we haven’t managed to solve the problem in the 150 years since we literally went to war over it, what makes anyone think we’ll manage it in the next 34?
Can you elaborate? As far as I can tell, the only right atheists do not have is that they are at a disadvantage when running for political office. Politicians have to pretend to believe in a deity to appeal to 51% of voters and an atheist is at a disadvantage.
However other than that, I really can’t think of any discrimination they/we face.
Even that seems like a minor barrier.
Considering that IQ and religion are negatively correlated, and becoming a national politician would require a high IQ (some people who hate politicians may disagree, but it is true. Most politicians have graduate degrees and have been successful in fields like law or business. You can’t do that and be dumb) you’d expect a fairly reasonable minority of politicians to be atheists. But I do not know if any are. I thought one was from the northeast (some guy with a PhD) but who knows if he is even in congress.
I’m sure there are a lot of closeted atheists in politics.
Well, yeah, but we’ve been struggling for recognition already for awhile. We may still be doing so in 2050 but from the way the OP was worded I assumed it meant outgroups who have not risen up and attempted to claim their rights as of yet. Hmm, perhaps we haven’t had much impact yet sure enough.
Little people are still at the back of the line. The disabled also still face extreme challenges and prejudice every day. Artificial beings or genetically engineered beings are a good one too.
Atheists? Please. While atheists may be dimly regarded by most people and it would be hard to be elected President as an atheist, we don’t face day to day discrimination. The worst thing that’s ever been said to me was “I’ll pray for you.” I’m horrified, truly. Now where there are actual laws that are enforced, I agree those need to go, but I have yet to lose a friend or a relative when they find out, or be denied service anywhere, or been shot at by police.
As CGP Grey put it, the territories are the only place in the universe where US citizens lose their voting rights based on geography - move anywhere else on Earth, or go into space, and you can generally cast an absentee ballot in your state of last residence.
Being an out atheist in the workplace outside of certain sectors can easily be an obstacle to promotion. An assistant manager for a pizza place I worked in told me to my face in front of 4 witnesses that I was ineligible for raises or promotion due to the fact i was not christian. He is now a district manager over about 20 stores.
When I filed a complaint with then local HR I was told it will be handled… my schedule slowly whittled down to 1 shift a week from 4.
I found another job.
Most of the sales force at another job were very religious and refused to interact with me until threats of disciplinary action against them forced them to play nice.
I have had a dozen times at job sites in my current employment (onsite tech) where customers and their office staff talked about how atheists should have no rights, be taken out to the edge of town and shot/tossed in a ditch, jailed, etc.
Discrimination against atheists is alive and well, and in my experience, more openly expresssed than racism.
