It's a LIBRARY, jerkass!

Ok, so I head over to the college library to watch a video for my French class. I sit down at one of the VCR’s (the only one available). Right next to me is a girl watching another video for a class. Like every two minutes she frickin bursts out laughing, and headphones or no, I can hear her quite well. And to top it off, she’s there eating a huge bag of carrot sticks (I wonder how many “NO EATING OR DRINKING IN THE LIBRARY” signs she walked by), making an obscene amount of noise as well. Damnit, in libraries you are supposed to be QUIET! It was all I could do to not strangle her with the headphones they gave me.

She probably would have been too into her video to notice. I tell you, some people have NO respect for everybody around them, and then the ones that DO end up getting all pissed. RGHH…

…and then, in my library, they banned walkmans for some reason. So they flatten ME whenever I walk in there and forget my headphones are on. It’s not like anyone else can hear the music! (If they could, I would be in the process of going deaf.)

In the cafeteria, there’s a small area called “Roo Corner” that has a huge bigscreen TV and satillite hooked up. It’s got lots of nice couches and chairs for people to watch TV and movies and stuff. EVERY SINGLE TIME I go in for lunch, the TV is on some shitty ass terrible fucking rap music. Now, I like rap music, GOOD rap music. This shit is No Limit/Cash Money type shit. HORRIBLE. And they have it turned up as loud as possible, so that it resonates throughout the building. And since it’s so loud, they have to scream over the top of it to talk. And they laugh. Loud. At the stupidest shit.

The behavior of the people that use the TV in this manner makes me wish we didn’t have one. Yes, it is only 10% that does it, but sadly, those 10% would ruin it for everyone else.

Homer, at least it isn’t the craptacular College Television Network. That channel is evil, it plays the most absurdly stupid music videos with a good one once every few hours, and every single TV in the cafeteria is stuck on that channel. Although I did see one video I liked that I hadn’t seen before, probably because the song hadn’t been popular for about a year and a half.

Yeah dude, I know what you mean. When I go to the library I go to get stuff done. I like it to be quiet.

Now on Mondays I have 2 Chemistry classes and there is a period of 3 hours between classes. During this time I like to go to the library to study and get work done. But it’s really annoying when sometimes I’m in there intently working and people decide to have a conversation. It’s the fucking library shut your fucking mouth you’re inturrupting my progress you pieces of monkey crap!

Most the time I’m pretty cool headed about it–I just ignore the distractors. But sometimes people forget it’s the library and unintentionally bother everyone constantly with their rambling conversation. This is when I stand up and say, “hey! I’m trying to get work done over here, you’re annoying me, go talk outside! please!” …and if I’m in a bad mood: “Shut the fuck up!!! I’m trying to get shit done over here! can you understand that???” <smack!>.

The library is meant to be quiet…

shhhhhhh!

For some reason?
For the reason that most people are sick and tired of listening to the tinny, intrusive noise pollution from the headphones.

OK - perhaps you are the one person who has the volume low enough that no-one else has to (badly) share your taste in music.

I travel on a noisy train most mornings to work, and I suffer this noise almost every day - even from people sitting at the other end of the carriage. Do you think it might be more intrusive (in general, we’re not talking about you here) in somewhere quite - like a library, say?

Amen to that. This happens to me a lot too. Not only that, but people watch this crap when the Simpsons reruns are on. Ugh.

Think that’s bad?
In our computer lab, the rule is if you listen to music/audio, you MUST wear headphones.
All the new freshman and the exchange students ignore this.
They play anything from Eminem to WebRadio in Africa, to Mariah Carey, etc etc…
I am so fucking sick of it!
But…I have a plan: the next time someone does it, I’m bringing in my Titanic cds…they’re getting BLASTED with My Heart Will Go On…
Yes, I am that cruel…

(And no, it’s not an age or race issue. It’s just that they’re new, or they’re the stuck up ones. NOt all, just some…and they don’t seem to care…fuck this shit!)

Wow, I can’t WAIT for college! I have so much to look forward to…

Why does this remind me of that sketch on the Nick show All That, where the librarian is the one making all the racket, when the people are trying to read and be quiet.

Library Lady: BE QUIET!!! THIS IS A LIBRARY!!!

That was pretty dumb of that computer lab to get computers with speakers. All the college labs I’ve ever seen have headphone jacks only.

This is where you walk over to the TV, change the channel to the Simpsons, and announce in a loud firm voice “I am going to watch The Simpsons now, you can turn it back to the garbage you watch 23 hours a day when I leave.”
Plan b: Buy a universal remote (or even better, one of those programmable TV watches), and surreptitiously change the channel to the Simpsons every time it’s on. They’ll get the message.
