Greg Abbott, the current Governor of Texas, is paralyzed due to an accident when he was in law school. He was jogging in a tony neighborhood in Houston when a tree fell on him. He has used a wheelchair pretty much ever since.
I absolutely despise his politics (he is against the ADA, even though it greatly facilitated his ability to practice law before the Texas Supreme Court; he favors tort reform, including limiting liability awards like the one that will provide for his medical needs for the rest of his life), but his disability has not appeared to affect his law or political career at all. One of the TV commercials from his last campaign shows him in his wheelchair in an empty parking structure. He said that he strengthened his arms and body during his recovery by wheeling himself up a parking structure. It was supposed to demonstrate his determination (at heading uphill to an ultimate dead end, but whatever).
