I have a wife and two kids (5 and 3) and a pit bull (8). I’ve never owned a dog before, but I love that guy as much s the rest of my family. He’s been a loyal companion and buddy, and has the added benefit of alerting us to any unusual activities outside. And it’s nice when none of the humans except me are home, that I’m not alone and have the gentle sounds of his snores and smell of his farts to keep me company.

But the headline is misleading. OWNING a dog is unlikely to be what’s helping us – Michael Vick “owned” dogs. Does anyone argue that conferred health benefits on him?
Living with a dog as a family member is almost certainly what was studied, not legal relationship.
I say this as a dog guardian, not an owner.
I think it’s loving the dog, not just living with it.
Some people live with dogs and don’t love them. Poor, pathetic creatures.

Sometimes both, like the pit linked in post #257, before learning to be a police dog. Didn’t hold any grudges against humans but wasn’t sure what to do at first.
I have three dogs. Hypothetically, if some majik being appeared before me and told me I had to choose between my dogs and crucible, with the loser being poofed away, I’d choose my dogs without so much as a second’s thought.

Because dogs often referred to as ‘pit bulls’ are actually 4-5 different breeds, including the Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Terrier, American Bulldog, Boston Terrier and more. Comparatively very few people can actually recognize a legitimate Pit Bull Terrier.
My city is looking to get rid of their 10 or so year ban on Pit Bulls, and I couldn’t be happier. It’s such a stupid ban. Even more idiotic when you know that the guy who pushed it so hard had a Golden Lab that bit a kid, was taken by Animal Control, and subsequently vanished and hasn’t been seen since. Fuck that guy.
