It's been three months...tell me if I had the damn job!

Way back in October I started this thread asking about a job. I had an interview for it in late October, and I still don’t know if I have the job or not.

It’s a lab position with a professor, and I know that they’re busy people, and often times a little absent minded (especially the science-y ones,) but three months is fucking ridiculous!

I was told in early November that the HR department told him he needed to interview one more person before he could make a decision, after having previously told me I was at the top of the list. I called him in early December to check on the position, and he said he had still yet top interview that third person, but it should be early the next week.

So another month later and still no word. I’m getting more than slightly annoyed. I’d like to say that even if offered, I’d say no out of spite, but the truth is I need any job I can get at this point, so of course I’d take it. But the other problem is that I have started applying to other jobs. What if I get an interview with one of them (snowball’s chance in Hell, but stranger things have happened in this world,)? I’d hate to have to decide between a mediocre job that I am guaranteed, and a possibly better job that would be up in the air.

I found in my line of work hotels and I’ve done accounting and computer too, people don’t bother telling you if you get the job. And that makes sense. If you got the job they will tell you. If they don’t you ain’t got it.

You should always keep looking anyway. I have had UNBELIEVABLE things happen to me

I had one person after 4 interviews call me in and ask me to come in, then when I get there she tells me they just wanted to let me know they gave the job to someone else. I swear I could’ve hit her. Why bother making me go to your office to tell me that.

I had another lady flew to Boise three interviews (at their expense so you know they are serious) never heard back. Six months later she emails me tells me, “Would you still be interested in it?” I emailed back sure. I figured they hired someone else and he didn’t work out. Then I followed that up with a phone call. Never called me back.

I had another person set me up with my email from my home to the corporate so I could get a handle on things for a week or so, while they finalize the details of the job. Then she just took me off the email and never got back to me to tell me I wasn’t going to get the job.

The job ettiquette has really changed since about 2003. I have never experienced such bad manners. I was flown to NYC for a job interview at 9am. Which meant catching a flight at 5am from Chicago. Guy never showed up for work. They finally got a hold of him around 2pm. He said he forgot. My flight was leaving at 5pm and they couldn’t change it and to keep me for another day would mean a hotel room and a fare increase for the next day. So they told me to go home. Never heard from them again.

From my experience, if they want you they’ll call. They haven’t called so they don’t want you. With the economy this bad places probably are told don’t hire. So they are stringing you along.

Bottom line is NEVER stop looking for a job until you have your first paycheck from your new job.

In 2005 I got a job. Started on Monday, I was an assistant controller for a hotel. Two days later at Wednesday’s staff meeting they told me they were selling the hotel. Of course they didn’t keep the hotel accounting staff on, so by January I was out of work again.

You can’t tell

I’m going through the same thing, except it’s been since September, and they have at least communicated once about the reason for the delay. However, in the meantime, my present job has “sweetened the deal”, so it looks like I’ll be staying here.

For you, my advice is to do what’s best for YOU. If you find a job that looks good, TAKE IT. Do not be “nice” and wait around for them, because frankly if they really wanted you, you’d be working there by now. Look out for yourself, and best of luck to you.

BTW< Markxxx, I have had similar things happen. It’s crazy out there…

Well, it seems like I didn’t get the job. That third candidate that HR made him interview is “even more qualified” than me, according to the professor. So a hearty FUCK YOU to the HR department. That job was fucking mine until you fucked it up with your Goddamn rules and regulations.

And my job prospects are back to nill. But I’m not worried, no. I’m sure someone with a BS they received four years ago with no relevant experience is sure to find something, what with the job market being so good right now, and companies not at all being flooded with resumes from people more qualified than me.
