It's garage sale season!

We indulged last week and came away with among other things:

A top of the line George Foreman Grill for $2

Fourteen brand new mostly Conservative oriented political books for $10

A purple scarf from Italy for $1

A set of five pop-up books for $1

Two pairs of ladies shorts (size I’m not revealing) and a lovely sweater for $2

One Tiffany stained glass (Oyster Bay style) window hanging for $1

An Art Institute of Chicago scarf in the style of a Monet painting for $1

I just love, love, love garage sales.

Share your best finds with me.

I got 6 "cat’ and one “dragon” beanie babies for $5. And a motorcycle cigarette lighter (that for some reason also contains a knife) for an additional $4.

It’s also canning season. I got my 8 quart pressure cooker at a garage sale for $5.00. Barely used, it came with a heaping pile of 1950’s vintage recipe pamphlets.

If you’ve got no use for the pamphlets, I would love to have them.

(For a negotiable price, even, if that’s allowed on the boards. If not, I’m sorry, most glorious Mods.)

I have a collection of vintage recipie books (it’s a hobby).

If you like vintage recipe books, you’ll love this site.

Cautionary note: Get to your local extension office and have the gague checked. You are supposed to do that every year, but with a used one, I highly, highly, highly recommend it. Presto and Mirro will also calibrate, I think. If you process at a lower pressure because your gague is off, you can die. Seriously, you could be paralysed to death.
Lighter note: I am considering taking up garage saling to acquire old cast iron cookware and other household gadgets. Would this be worth my time? I guess I’m asking how likely I am to run into that type of stuff. I really don’t want to spend my weekends wading through old 8-tracks and puked on baby clothes for no reason.

I’m not much of a garage sale-er, but I love Goodwill. My latest find was a lampshade for 99 cents. The fabric is a hunt scene in hunter green with horses and dogs and foxes. My “spare” room is being done with a horse motif so this fits perfectly.

What’s the best garage sale find? If it weren’t for garage sales (and stuff I’ve pulled out of trash), then I’m afraid I wouldn’t have anything in my house.

A few highlights…

Two beautiful wooden tables (that were originally two sides of a dressing table) with two drawers each table–bought at a “house fire” sale (slight smoke colored when I bought them, but it came off when I stripped them) for $10 for the pair.

An oak cabinet about three feet high with beautiful trim and a double door opening in front. It was painted a horrible white color (with chipping paint). I stripped it, then repainted. Cost: $3

A writing desk, bought at the same “house fire” sale. All it needed was some cleaning. Cost: $5

London Fog heavy duty coat for Hallboy (will fit him this winter). Bought this summer for $2

Portable sewing machine that I’ve used to no end for many years. Cost: $10

Many, many, many yards of drapery fabric in a deep red color that I used to make drapes for my diningroom and my bedroom (and still have leftover fabric). Cost: $5 for the entire bolt.

Antique Oak diningroom table and chairs, that can seat 8 (10 if we cram) wit the leaves in. Cost: $200 (probably the most expensive thing in my house, aside from the appliances), but worth every penny.

Matching side buffet to the diningroom table (bought at another sale, and months before the table), with two drawers and an incredible wooden design on the two doors. Cost: $20

1950’s kitchen table with one leaf and three chairs with red vinyl seats. Cost: $40 (I’ve seen one similar to the one I bought, at other places for around $200) I later found another chair almost exactly like the three during trash pick up day. Cost: Free

Walnut dresser with four drawers. Antique wheels on the bottom of the legs. Cost: Free (pulled it out of the trash).

The list Hallgirl 1 has for her stuff is impressive. (Couch and chair were $12, dresser was free, etc.)

I’m having a garage sale in 2 weeks. Still have a ton of stuff to do. :frowning:

I found another set of shelves on someone’s front lawn a couple days ago. They were free. I’m painting them today because they’re a dreadful colour. A great deal of our furniture came from someone’s lawn, and most of it was free. We have a gorgeous set of bamboo Pier One dining room chairs that we had to pay for, but we’ve gotten four sets of shelves, two couches, a rice cooker, and a laundry basket free.

Sorry. Had to brag. Yard sales and free stuff on lawns are great.
