Its/It's and There/Their/They're

Due to the blantant misuse of its and their, I present:

http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/cgi-shl/quiz.pl/its_there_quiz.htm

I got 9 out of 10, I missed #2. I always get confused over possessive.

10/10. Natch.

The school English lessons are still holding firm in the noggin. 10/10 for me as well.

10, of course. Billy basic.

I see possessive apostrophes appearing all the time where they don’t belong. For some reason, a lot of people think it makes a word plural, not possessive.

10/10.

10/10 but number 4 gave me quite a pause.

Yeah WTF #4?

His fear of its being a very long season seemed contagious.

What the hell does that mean?

10/10 BTW. #4 was a guess.

10 out of 10!

So I can still claim to be a grammar nerd and continue to annoy my husband. Hee!

10 for 10, of course, but I’m with brewha: what does “His fear of its being a very long season seemed contagious” mean? I have an English degree and have never seen that construction before. Usually people say “His fear that it would be a long season seemed contagious.” Don’t they?

10/10. These are a pet peeve of mine.

uh oh - 8/10. I loose. Or I lose. Whatever. aagghh.
I missed #4 and I missed a random one in the theirtheretheyre section simply because I clicked the wrong damn button.

“Do all apes wash they’re/their/there hands?” gave me paws

(Sorry. Will there be a “Who/Whom” and “Who/That/Which” round?)

9/10. I guessed wrong on #4, but I’m not convinced either answer for #4 is correct.

“Its being” translates as “of it being”. Seeing as it isn’t an abbreviated “it is” – “its” is the only option.

Dunno. I’ve seen that tons of times – I’m surprised others here haven’t.

Blurnk.

That’s the new, official word for “I got 10 out of 10, but man, #4 was certainly confusing”.

Blurnk.

Those are pet peeves of mine. :smack:

10/10. Yay me!

Indeed. I scored 9/10, too. Stupid #4.

That’s what I love about this place. This may be the only forum on the www where people are adept at spelling and grammar!
No LOL-ing, ROTF-ing, or N E way-ing here. Hopefully I will never have to see the usage of the commonly misspelled “noone” in place of “no one” ever again!

10/10

10/10.
I agree that #4 was confusing.
