i don’t see christmas as an end-all to the exclusion of everything else. i just want to celebrate it. so maybe we could kill the thread this way:
Merry Christmas to all, and may your own special celebrations be just as merry!

Or you could just say “Happy Holidays,” since that includes Christmas, and also includes other people’s non-Christmas celebrations.
you’re asking for it…
Asking for what? A rational explanation for your dislike of the phrase “happy holidays?”
just a rib, in keeping with the “holiday” feeling (includes april fools, by the way.)
As an atheist, I’m happy to say “Merry Christmas.” Why should the Christians have all the fun?
not all of it but i’ve a feeling they deserve something for being so obliging and accomodating to others.
Oh, yes, quite accommodating. :rolleyes::smack::dubious:
what did i tell you?
Nothing?
Merry Christmas.
Happy holidays.
Happy Holidays - Bing Crosby & Fred Astaire - Holiday Inn - YouTube - it’s not a rickroll
I’m pretty sure the reason you know less of those holidays is that you’re a nasty little racist shit who doesn’t give a damn about anything not celebrated by the right kind of white person.
Pretty sure that’s the root of your objection to the phrase, “Happy Holidays,” too.
Do Americans seriously say “Happy Holidays” to each other? I thought it like a made-up thing to make American TV shows easier to hawk to Christian-minority countries.
Riveting Winter Solstice to you too, mac.
Is this the “War on Christmas” I’ve heard so much about?
So people don’t want to say and do things the way you want them to. We’re not talking about eating/not eating babies, either. Just words. They want to (gasp!) use an all-inclusive term and you think they shouldn’t, and it steps on the way YOU want things to be. You expect people to fall in line or you spout righteous indignation. Are you really mystified that people don’t bend to your will? Cry me a river.
What a nob.
Happy Holidays, though!
Oddly enough, there are a number of people in my life I am likely to see only once between October and February. So why shouldn’t I cover all the holidays at once?
And opposed to your method, which completely denies the existence of anything other than a Christian holiday?
Seems to me YOUR method is far more diminishing of anyone outside of Christianity than a “happy holidays” is.
How would you feel about someone insisting it should be “Joyous Yule” or “Significant Solstice” rather than “Merry Christmas”? Which, by the way, I’ve been told is an American phrase and phrases like “Happy Christmas” are used in other places like Britain.
^ This is actually acceptable on a certain level. You’re sharing your joy but ALSO acknowledging other traditions exist.
Hey, I work in retail. It’s a minefield. Now, if some little old man walks into the store wearing a beard, earlocks, yarmulke, and prayer shawl I can feel pretty confident about wishing him a happy whatever-Jewish-holiday-is-occuring. If a woman stops by wearing a hibjab or chador and the last name on her credit card is some variant of “Muhammad” I feel reasonably comfortable wishing her a blessed fast on Ramadan. An ostentatiously displayed cross on a lady wearing a habit? That’s a Merry Christmas.
But most people don’t wear their religion on their sleeve. Not to mention all the atheists whom I don’t want to offend, either. Thanksgiving was easy - “have a good holiday this weekend!” Now we come to the December minefield. At least most non-Christians will be quiet in their distaste, if it even exists, in hearing the “wrong” holiday greeting but Og save me from the hyper-sensitive Christian types who have to turn the inclusive greeting of “happy holidays” into a loud tirade in front of the cash register. GTFO yourselves. Yes, you’re the majority in this country but there are plenty of others who aren’t in your tribe. Seriously, why is “happy holidays” so damn threatening to some people?
