It's not even winter and I already hate you motherfuckers

You chose to live in places with snow. Learn to walk on it.

Just like I learned to walk on sunshine covered sidewalks when I moved to a place that only gets sunshine. I didn’t spend my time whining about how nobody was removing the sunshine from the sidewalk so I could walk on it.

Lazy people.

Southern California rocks!

I’m torn between just calling you a jerk and leaving it at that, and labouriously explaining to you that clearing sidewalks is required by law in all places that get snow.

But . . .but. . .gloating is keeping me warm!

If it dosen’t snow where you live, but it does earthquake, you may want to keep karma in mind and perspective before you judge that clearing a sidewalk of snow and ice is a real big deal. Which reminds me, those of you with sidewalks full of snow and ice: suck it. And shovel that shit you lazy p.o.s.

Yes, and it’s measured in the Richter scale; same as here BTW. It also slides, same as here again, and burns (advantage to us on this one). But at least it’s unlikely to get blown away by 140+ mph winds.

This. Required by law or not - just fucking walk on it, you special snowflakes.

No.

As a regular walker, I don’t mind a little snow on the sidewalk. I actually like the delightful crunchy feeling under my feet.

But it really is dangerous when that shit is allowed to freeze over. I shouldn’t have to worry about breaking my neck just because you’re too lazy to throw down some rock salt. Nor should your letter carrier. Or the little old lady who takes her pooch out for a walk.

I also don’t think you want to be sued.

Yup. Fuck that. My letter carrier husband broke his ankle because snow covered up ice while walking his route. I broke my wrist (on our property) for the same reason. You can’t just “learn to walk on it” if there’s ice underneath or if it’s piled up high enough that it’s difficult to even walk through.

Even when I lived in the frozen north, I never lived any place that had sidewalks. So, I am a bit confused at the requirement to remove the snow - doesn’t that make the sidewalks icy?

Heh, if you are smart, you live in a place unlikely to have an earthquake actually centered there, and away from where the rich people have their slides and burns.

I lived through the Loma Prieta earthquake, and I’ve lived next to people who didn’t shovel their sidewalk. One was a natural disaster, the other was moral evil. You’re not just a lawbreaker if you don’t shovel your sidewalk, you’re a bad person. It doesn’t matter what else you’ve done.

At least in my town there’s a snitch line to denounce people who don’t shovel.

Not if you throw down some rock salt.

If you leave snow on the sidewalk, it doesn’t stay nice and powdery. It tends to gets hard and icy, especially as it gets compressed by everyone and their mama’s feet. Which then makes it even more of a pain to shovel it when you finally get around to do it.

Walking on freshly-fallen snow is fine (if a little difficult - think walking in deep sand); when the snow is packed down, it turns into a slippery surface. Thawing and re-freezing turns it into ice.

Clearing the freshly-fallen snow prevents it from packing down and eliminates the thawing/re-freezing issues. A bare sidewalk is not slippery - there’s nothing to make it slippery.

It never ceases to amaze me that someone comes in and points out a flaw in someone’s rant and then supposedly smart people come in and irrationally defend the flawed version instead of acknowledging that flaw.

Go actually look at the OP. Does it name any specific people? Nope. It just condemns every person who shovels their driveway but not their sidewalk. When you cast a wide brush, you are going to wind up insulting people who do not feel they deserve to be insulted. Those people are, at the very least, going to feel the need to defend themselves.

Stop coming up with reasons to condemn others and direct your gaze inward. Find out why acknowledging a flaw in an argument is such a horrible thing. Maybe you are the one who feels guilty for condemning people, as you didn’t stop to think about the full picture, that they might have reasons for doing what they do.

And, because I know how your guys’ minds work: I don’t even have a freaking sidewalk and never have.

Wha? I’m sure every person in my neighbourhood who doesn’t shovel their sidewalk has a reason for not doing it. I don’t fucking care. Shovel that shit.

I’m behind you on this one. I rent and my landlord doesn’t shovel our driveway or the sidewalk! My boyfriend’s been on disability for a few months recovering from ankle surgery and can’t even leave the house. It’s goddamn ridic! I’ve got enough to do with working full time and doing all the chores every single day, I don’t have time for that shit.

If the adjoining snow melts, it can slick up the sidewalk when it refreezes. That’s why I’m saying people should throw down some rock salt. It’s cheap and easy and it can really keep people from hurting themselves.

I thought if you rent a house you’re responsible for shoveling, just like you have to mow the grass. That was always the case when I rented. If it’s in the lease, or you’re in an apartment, though, rant away. I always thought that the sound of my apartment’s sidewalk being shoveled before dawn was always quite restful.

What is “snow”?
