I read an interesting article on MSN.com. The people who are going to decide what to do with the World Trade Center site are going to delay their decision. Apparently, noone much cares for the six official proposals. We had a thread on this topic a little while back, and it seemed that not many Dopers could work up much enthusiasm for any of the proposals, either.
I am not an NYC resident, but I think a garden of remembrance and peace would be a good idea. Not more offices. And certainly not a hotel. Who on earth would want to stay there?
Not at all surprising. This is still very fresh in people’s mind’s, it’s too soon to really try to replace the structures.
The wise thing to do would be to wait a while - a good year of so. It won’t happen, if for no other reason but property values in the city, but so many people just want the “best, most perfect thing” to go in there, nobody will be happy with anything else.
You have to be realistic - NY real estate is far to valuable to not rebuild on it.
And it kind of makes sense for them to build a hotel, there having been one there in the first place before the collapse.
4 words: not one foot shorter.
And if the victims’ families want final say over what is built there, they should buy the land.
11 million square feet of office space were lost… That needs to be replaced, somewhere, somehow. I’m not all that impressed with the proposals, but will not go so far as to call them ‘sucky’. The orginal two towers were something of an eyesore, too, for all that they were technical and architetcural tours de force.
Pick a design that meets the needs, any of them, and get on with it, I say.
Anybody else seen this unconventional design?
Very cool, but it’ll never be built
Are there any drawings/graphic renderings of the proposed new structures? I liked the joke one that looked like a middle finger.
It does indeed look like you picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue. Your link points to a world telecommunications conference website not a proposed WTC design.
I think this is the link that av8rmike meant.
I can’t tell if that design is serious or not. Read what it says under “safety”, for example.
Also, helipads in between the towers? Yeah, that’s practical… :smack:
