It's the 1970s, semi-obscure country music appreciation thread

Uh, no. Try 24 Top 40 country hits, including 11 that made the Top 10 and three #1’s.

One of them, “Just Like Real People” (which just missed the Top 10) is one of the two greatest country songs of the last quarter of the 20th century, IMHO.

The other is “Good Ole Boys Like Me” by Don Williams. As it happens, both songs were written by the great Bob McDill, whose best work I would put up against any of the more vaunted songwriters of that era.

Regarding the OP’s song Will they have moak and david in heaven

Anyone know what that means? I’ve wondered about that for 40 years.

Mogan David 20/20. Cheap wine, better known as “Mad Dog,” much beloved of skid row winos. Am I being whooshed?

Ignorance fought. Thanks – I’ll look for those songs.

No whoosh. I never liked wine and didn’t know any brands except Boones Farm (lots of tv commercials). Ignorance fought.

thanks

No love for Tom T? (Song from 1972.)

Hmmm… My favourite by Emmylou is from '82, and my favourite from the Bellamys is from '85.

Merle, 1973.

Possum, 1970.

Tompall, 1975.

Also mentioned here:smiley:

One last trio…

Moe.

Joe.

Moe and Joe.

When I was eight years old, I remember hearing the song Singin’ in the Kitchen by Bobby Bare on the radio all the time.

You must be my kids’ age. We had that on a 45 and it was one of their favorites. They’ll still try to sing it, after a few beers, and if they’re in the mood for reminiscing. If they’re really in the mood, they’ll segue into Convoy.

I am wondering if anyone can help me… I believe it was a 70’s country song but is possible it was early 80’s. The only lyrics I can remember well are “Whatever happened to mamas and daddies living and loving together” and a line about: Mama and Daddy on opposite shores “Look who’s sinking out in the middle”. I know not much to go on, but I’ve been searching for this song for ages. I was very young when I first heard it and it was played a lot for a short time. Any clues?

Great memories! This was the era I discovered country music, played on WEEP out of Pittsburgh.

Charlie Pride Is Anybody Going to San Antone

Tommy Cash I Recall a Gypsy Woman

Johnny Rodriguez Riding My Thumb to Mexico

Youtube pulled this. What song is it?

Wildfire.

[/QUOTE]

When she was very little, my sister had a spring-loaded rocking horse that she called Wildfire because of that song. I had to listen to C&W all through the 70’s because that’s what my parents liked and so the radio in the kitchen was LOCKED onto WMZQ, DC’s country radio station. But it was all popular C&W tunes, so most of the stuff in this thread is unknown to me.

Here’s a few, trying to stick to vaguely obscure stuff…

Billy Joe Shaver
David Allan Coe
Gram Parsons
Guy Clark
Hoyt Axton
Johnny Russell
Marty Robbins (Not best known for his 70s stuff, but this rather wonderfully references one of his great early hits)
Mickey Newbury (The second most underrated artist of the 70s)
New Riders Of The Purple Sage
The Statler Brothers

And of course Townes Van Zandt, the single most underrated artist of the 70s, or probably ever.

Quite possibly the greatest C.B. song ever recorded, I give you Rod Hart’s C.B. Savage
“I’m in your chair, and I love it there!”

WKRP in Cincinatti introduced me to Hoyt Axton’s Della and the Dealer

It’s from 1980 but my wild guess would be Johnny Lee’s Lookin’ for Love (in all the wrong places)

SttrzAngel,

Any chance the song you are looking for is BJ Thomas’ Whatever Happened to Old Fashioned Love?

Great song. Because of my great wife, after 25 years, we are still living it.

This thread has helped me with some ideas, and perhaps can help me find an obscure 70’s country fun song. I know a chunk of the lyrics that go something like “I got this big old computer, and now it’s looking up my redneck family tree” … computer “more beer please”
For years I’ve off and on been searching for the artist and song, but no luck.
Anyone heard of it?
