"It's the beginning fo the World...of Warcraft."

I’ve actually shut down my 2 accounts right now, but looking at the proposed expansion coming out next year I may rethink that.

If you want to group a lot I’d go with a Priest myself. Draenei get some racial healing abilities that go well with that class. Myself, my Draenei is a Shammy and I think the race works really well with that class. Being a healer type is always a good place to start in an MMO…unless you like being a tank. In WoW I think the tank classes are a bit more difficult to play in the middle and upper levels when you really need to start working in a group, than the healer types. If you are a loner play a Warlock (though IIRC Draenei can’t be 'locks, if your heart is set on that race).

The other thing you’ll want to do is look at getting some decent UI mods. The stuff that comes with the game is ok…but I couldn’t play the game at all without the mod I use (I’ve been using it or a variant of it since the beta). I use the Insomnix mix (used to be Cosmo), but there are tons out there. Look them over and use whatever works best for you. But definitely use something…they can seriously enhance your game play, leveling, PvP…everything.

Whoa! WoW is totally WOW!

Seriously, I’ve been playing the Alliance (Night Elf Hunter 6, Dwarf Warrior 16). It’s great. I absolutely love it, much mroe than pretty much any other

I got a bit tired of the Dwarf, because he was (a) slow and (b) not very exciting to play. They’ve got no buffs or anything like that and aren’t much better on offense than, say paladins. No emergency healing when another enemy jumps you from behind or spawns atop you right after a fight. This has been more or less the sole cause of my death, as I only have so many potions and they’re pretty weak. I do like the Rage mechanic, but I wish I had something more to do with it; many of the warrior abilities vary considerably in effectiveness against some opponents, and I wish I had minor buffs to use it, at least for a few minutes effect. Actually, I also had an issue where I need to respec and have no points for it. I put points into Arms -> the Rend enhancement. Very good deal at the time, but it didn’t increase fast enough and now I have three nearly-useless Talent points. I expected Rend would keep up better over the long haul, but my normal hits are as good as the entire Rend blled damage, so it’s not very useful. That’s making it tougher to advance.

Also, something to speed up travel without be desperately beloved.

You’ll get Aspect of the Cheetah at level 20, which is a run-fast(er) Aspect. It’s nice, except if you get damaged you get automatically Dazed for a moment. Not only does this hurt if you’re trying to run through dangerous areas, but you also tend to forget to switch Aspects when going into battle and get yourself Dazed.

Wait until you get a pet at level 10! Try Petopia for more info than you ever wanted to know about pets. Most hunters try to have a high-damage pet (Cats are nice because they can Stealth) and a tank-type pet - boars are good for the latter, and they eat pretty much everything too.

Two sessions, level 6 the first and now level 12. I LOVE the Hunter.

Shadow Priests melt faces…

I’ve just picked up again after a while, and I’ve got to agree with xtisme - Draenei do work out pretty nicely as priests. Though I’m going shadow spec for face-melting, it’s still nice to have an extra heal-over-time to bust out when I need it. And there’s been surprisingly little deathage even though I’m incredibly squishy.

That said, I’m still considering a tank class as well.

What server, smiling bandit?

Moon Guard. As soon as I can get a copy (I’m on trial version) I’m so playing a Blood Elf mage.

Excellent choice!

If you’d consider a different realm for your Blood Elf, may I suggest Blackwater Raiders? We can always use more in The Inner Circle, and I can guarantee you an idiot-free experience (at least in the guild–the Horde on this server is actually pretty cool too, for the most part.)

I’ll think about it. I have a friend (very experienced Everquest player) whose coming in and he might not want to switch his Orc Rogue over.

Leroy Jenkins!

Dere is no Aggro Reset!

Smiling Bandit,
blush I read your thread and then went and downloaded the trial version this Sunday and then I was annoyed that I couldn’t send tells so I bought the game and expansion pack this Monday. (I wanted to be able to send tells to people sending random group invites to me i.e.: “I’m sorry, I’m much too pathetic to consider grouping yet.”).

It’s been very fun, though I’ve avoided people a bit. They seem to do a lot of jumping about and dueling each other… And some think ‘newbie’ equals ‘idiot’: I had people telling me to accept guild invitations with: ‘click yes! you’ll get money!’

On the other hand, most people have been friendly, I tend to give random heals/buffs/waves and people have been generally nice - though some send sparkles about while talking to me. (Can priests send sparkles to look cool?)

I notice people saying that Horde tends to be a bit older/more together than Alliance. Is this only on pvp?

Valancy, Level 7 Human Priest, Server…er…starts with an ‘A’ it’s PVE.

I’ve been having a severe case of alt-itis, which isn’t helping my main out too much. Ah well!

As for guilds, the best thing to do would be to find some people you know from elsewhere, or find some people you like in a pick-up group and ask to join. Don’t accept invitations out of the blue… but that’s obvious anyway.

Simeon (among others), 70 Human Rogue, Azjol-Nerub.

I can see why! So many of the classes look so interesting! I tend to stand around GoldShire and gawk a bit - they turn into big bears or HAVE big bears following them around or are walking around all shadowy (which makes me want to say ‘I see you!’, but then I would be the ‘creepy newbie’ as opposed to the ‘newbie’ ).

I do the same thing. I like the early areas best. Although I haven’t built up too far, my main is a lvl49 Paladin, but I have a bunch of 15-20s. I’ve avoided buying BC, but at some point I will and then I can start a few Draenei toons.

On Sen’Jin.

Is there a SDMB guild on a server somewhere? I kind of stopped playing after the guild I was in fell apart.

My main is on Scryers and I have a bunch of alts on Scarlet Crusade that I hardly ever use since there is always a queue for Scarlet Crusade (my main used to be there but I moved him over on a free server move).

I never bothered picking up BC since my max character is only level 45 (I’m pretty much a casual player). I suppose I’ll pick it up sometime before Lich King comes out.

The people sending you random group invites don’t want to play with you. They’re trying to sell you gold.

IME, it’s not just a PVP thing. My guess is that it’s because playing a Horde character may be a little more difficult than a similar Alliance character (e.g., Horde cities are a little more spread out than Alliance, forcing you to frequently wander close to Alliance-occupied territory). This helps in weeding out some people, but it’s obviously not fool proof.

That’s my theory anyway.
LilShieste

The common theory is that it’s due to the Horde races generally being uglier, with the kids tending to pick the “hot female avatar” side. Hence we got Blood Elves and Dranaei to try and redress that balance.

Damn you, Occam!
