Gerber has announced that they will no longer package their babyfood in glass jars, resorting instead to plastic cube shapes with snap on lids.
Oh, the humanity!
what are the crafters in summer camp to do?
What are countless hobby-type hubbys to do?
and, for godsake,
What about the children?!!?!!
Why, for years I’ve lurked in parking lots searching for that tell-tale bulge in a coat, to strike up a conversation, seemingly innocent, so that some months away, I can offer to take those wonderful utility laden items ‘off her hands’.
Snowglobes! Jars (for my homemade mustard)! Crafty supply containers! ohhhhh, the possabilities are endless.
But Noooooooo. Corporate greedy bastids have poisoned the well from which hope had sprung eternal.
What’s next? paper film cannisters?
But they’re still making that Baby No Taste Custard, right? I mean, it won’t be the same slurping it out of a plastic cube, but future generations of older siblings will still be able to slurp the Gerber custard from something, won’t they? **WON’T THEY!!??
No, no, no, no!!!
Please, for the love of God, NO!!!
I use glass baby food jars in school all the time.
We make snowglobes, rainbows, ocean-in-a-jars, all kinds of things.
Damn, damn, damn.
Double damn.
Glad I stocked up last year. I had a parent with twins who gave me TONS of them.
Maybe the plastic ones will work okay. I wish they had a picture of what it will look like.
Aw, man! Cubes? That’s just not right. Not right at all.
And what’s up with saying 70% of consumers prefer baby food in plastic containers? 70% of what consumers? Where? I’ve never seen plastic baby food containers, and I’ve actually got babies (well, they’re toddlers now, but it was only a year ago that my youngest stopped eating baby food).
:::Persephone wanders off, muttering to herself, “cubes?”:::
And Kinsey I’m afraid that the new ones won’t be as useful - it’s fairly certain they won’t be clear, so no more snowglobes, colored sand pictures, interesting bean jars, ‘bath salt’ jars. and since they’re plastic, no more candles …:::::
It just isn’t FAIR
::falls to the ground in a heap, sobbing uncontrollably::
I dunno, this has a “New Coke” feel to it. Remember when Coke did all their market research showing that consumers preferred the new coke formula over the “traditional” formula? The research was correct…as far as it went. But it failed to take into account peoples’ sentimental attachment to the product.
I could see the same thing happening in this kind of case…using baby food jars for secondary purposes is imbedded in the culture…I could see a corporate “re think” down the road.
There are other brands out there that I assume still use glass jars (Heinz…store brands…)? If they gain market share…
wring: Alas, I gave them all to my mom and other friends. I think. I’ll check in the basement & see if I’ve got any more. If I do, I’ll bring 'em to the Fest, and you can have them.
beagledave: I was thinking that too, about Heinz gaining on Gerber due to this…this…ptooey! This travesty! This nonsense! This completely poopy-headed idea! It’s lame! Lame, I say!
Sorry about that. Glass baby food jars just mean a lot to me…:::snif snif:::
It’s FOOD, Milo. Whirled, smushed, whomped, liquefied, unseasoned, and poured in to a really small jar, sure, but other than that, it’s the same stuff that grown-ups eat. Really!
sorry to break it to u all, but the plastic cubes have craft potential as well. im not entirely sure what, but im sure someone in the teeming millions will come up with someting
