I myself find the showering weird. But I am not from the world of athletics. These guys are constantly hanging around naked in showers. So I don’t know if it’s quite as weird for those guys.
Even Sandusky agrees that he shouldn’t have showered with the kids. But I don’t know if it has as much of a suspicious aura for people in those circles as it would for others.

We’ve been through that JP controlled the football program, so no need for that. But I can’t imagine that head coaches of major football programs are successful by paying attention to who is showering with who. [People said that Jimmy Carter knew who was scheduling use of the White House tennis courts, but that was a criticism of his micromanaging style, which made him a poor chief executive.]
Fotheringay-Phipps, I’d love to know in what universe it is ever acceptable for an adult male to shower with a ten-year-old? Because it’s not acceptable in sports. In fact, when I was a volunteer soccer coach a few years ago, part of the training involved a fairly detailed discussion of risk management, which included scenarios concerning appropriate behavior for adults working with kids. The handout was intended for all volunteer coaches regardless of sport or activity, and I’m pretty sure I remember there being something about adults not being in the bathroom alone with a child. I’m also pretty sure that the organization would flip out if an adult showered with a child; the police would undoubtedly be called and an arrest would be made.
Even if Sandusky is telling the truth that nothing sexual happened, it was still wildly inappropriate for him to be in the shower with them. Period, end of discussion.
There are NO kids who can benefit from the type of relationship Sandusky had with them.
There are many kids who can benefit from a relationship with someone with a successful career, particularly in sports which can help be a source of pride, discipline, responsibility and life-focus. There are many kids who can benefit from having access to academic and athletic services and to perhaps earn resources such as scholarships or computers.
Men who fit these roles are respectable people.
But when the relationship is one where the powerful, successful individual takes advantage of the position to obtain physical contact, to take the child into private rooms, to take the child onto trips and stay alone with them, to shower alone with them, too keep them in basement bedrooms for overnights or extended periods of time…these were all observed and noticed by others and IT IS ABSOLUTELY SUSPICIOUS.
There’s no reason for a coach/trainer to be showering with his team. There’s no reason for a coach/trainer of a university team to be showering alone with a minor. IT IS ABSOLUTELY SUSPICIOUS.

Funny, it sounds to me as as though Paterno sensed that things were veering into an area that he was not equipped by law, training or profession to deal with, and he felt, correctly, that whatever McQueary had to say would best be told to administration officials who were equipped to investigate and act upon it.
Call me a pedophile apologist if you want, but since alternative explanations do not = apology, and that zero evidence has been presented to suggest that Paterno is a pedophile himself, I don’t think you’d have much luck proving your case.

He was in a position to do something to fix a bad situation and chose not to. He was informed of enough information to SUSPECT that SANDUSKY was a pedophile, yet he chose to turn a blind eye to it and pretend it never happened. He’s dirt.
