I think the idea is that Martians is a code word here. There obviously are not any actual green Martians living in Idaho or any other state. So Martians and green people is a code word for another skin color which can be found in many states but is rare in Idaho.

I think it’s less likely a code word for race and more likely a coy cutesy way of trying to talk about aliens, likely of the “illegal” variety.
I just want to say thank you to davidm for making this topic. So many people still think its either ok or not a big deal for such casual racism to be flaunted in daily life. With the way he’s being attacked by a certain sub-group here, you’d think that NOT being a racist was the minority!
Yes, you should be annoyed that other white people are projecting their racism onto you. No, you should not just ignore it and pretend it never happens, such beliefs are stupid and dangerous, and leads to things like the incident in Florida, so when people casually mention their racism to you then you should damn well speak up and yes, that deserves a pat on the back. Too many people are still too afraid to stand up for that, or are content to just let it go
It’s more of a reference to greed, really. Anyway, even if it was a nice thing to say, it’s still a stereotype. “Jews secretly rule the world” makes Jews sound pretty awesome, but if you get enough people to believe it they start killing off Jews just to be on the safe side.
I am a mulatto who looks pretty much white (to white people). I wish I looked more overtly black just so moronic white racists would keep their racism to themselves instead of try to “float” it by me to see if I agree, because then I’m in the awkward position of deciding if I feel like fighting that battle, with this particular person, at that particular time.
But then again if I was more black looking I’d be much more likely to get murdered for walking down around in the wrong neighborhood armed with a bag of skittles and an iced tea apparently.
I’m a white guy that lives, with his wife and baby, in a poor section of a largish Southern city. Our neighborhood is perhaps 85% black. We’re completely comfortable here.

Heck, I’ll even call out racists on YouTube. Oddly enough, there really seem to be some people who don’t get it, like the guy who claimed he couldn’t be racist because he was black, although he was saying that Paula Patton shouldn’t call herself black because she’s “mixed”.
When I come into a place where I overhear racist remarks or discussion, the participants (if non aggressive), will sometimes lower their voices, or make note of my presence to one another; while looking at me with a sort of feigned innocence or mischievousness.
I’m one of those (apparently common, but to some few, inexplicable or must be lying and praise seeking) who finds bigotry toward groups I am not in any way part of, emotionally upsetting.
The worse the racism or whatever bigotry is, the more upset I get. I’ve even on a day where I was particularly stressed out, burst into tears when I heard people say things like that. I would be way less upset if they made a direct insult to me, actually.
From my understanding, the Pit is a forum to express rants and upset feelings toward things in the world or on the boards. So I don’t think it’s at all reasonable to assume the primary reason for any such post is praise-seeking. I certainly don’t expect or get praise for my emotional outbursts about bigotry when they happen. The primary reason is most probably to vent, like most things here. Venting on a message board is a good outlet.

There is a black “shock jock” “angry old man” radio personality that irritates the shit out of me because he simultaneously claims to be pointing out racism, and at the same time spouts outrageously racist crap!
