iTunes and authorizing other users

Let me try to be brief in describing the issue.

I burned some music on a CD for a friend. We’re both Mac. When she went to load the disc it told her that she needed my iTunes password to authorize her computer to play the tracks I had purchased from iTunes.

It appears that if another user has your account name and password (required to listen to the music I burned for her) she then has full access to my account. She could change my password, see what songs I’ve purchased, etc.

Is this correct? Can I authorize another user without giving him or her access to my account info?

Thanks,

I don’t think you can do that. Youve burned a CD containing the protected files which were directly downloaded from the Music Store. Instead, you can burn an MP3 disc or a regular audio CD, and either one will work in someone else’s computer.

The selection should be in the iTunes preferences. Click on the Advanced tab, and then on the Burning tab.

The songs were burned as MP3s.

That’s strange, because the only kind of files that iTunes/Quicktime protects are AAC format, and they have the .m4p extension.

Aaah. Color me stupid. My friend said they showed up as .mp4 but I thought she just mis-typed “mp3”. Perhaps I burned them as "data CD"s which I was using to back up my library?

I’ll reburn them as audio CD’s and try again.

thank you,
