iTunes questions (check box and UPnP)

Coupla questions:

  1. What is that little checkbox for, the one to the left of the Name column?

  2. Does Apple have any plans to implement UPnP? If not, are adapters like Allegro or Twonky worth the dough?

I am pretty sure that Itunes has been supporting UPnP for a few years now for audio. I have a roku labs device connected to my stereo. I can serve music to it with iTunes, Windows Media Connect or Twonkyvision. I have tried all three and find that Windows Media Connect works the best. If I used iTunes instead of WinAmp I would probably find that iTunes worked best. It is too much of a hassel to manage my music with iTunes.

Twonky audio server stuff is free.

The check box is to select whether or not a song goes on your mp3 player.

That depends on whether you have that setting checked in iPod preferences.

It’s main use is to basically turn a song “On” or “Off” when playing music from your Library. For instance, if you have a bunch of Christmas music, but don’t want to hear that stuff 'til December 15th, you can uncheck the box. Of course if you double click the song, you can still get it to play, but it won’t advance to any other song.

When ripping music from a CD, iTunes will only import those songs that are checked. Only like tracks 3, 5 and 12? Uncheck the rest and hit “Import.” iTunes will only rip those three songs.

By the way, you can quickly check/uncheck all songs on a disc, Library or playlist by holding down the (Mac: Command / Windows: Control) key while checking one of them.
