iTunes

I am a new user of iTunes. I am trying to burn music cd’s (for personal use… not to be sold… blah blah blah). My problem is with the varying recording levels of each song. Is there a way to normalize the recording levels using iTunes, or do I need some other Mac music software?

I haven’t noticed this as a problem. I expect that the iTunes software must compensate for this or doesn’t care. I’m using shareware called Ultra Recorder to go from vinyl through a Griffin iMic and into the iMac. Ultra Recorder lets you click an “automatic level set” for recording purposes. On the other hand, if you’re making copies of entire CDs, rather than compiling songs from many CDs, consider that engineers, producers and mastering engineers worked to set the relative levels of each song to achieve what they thought was ideal. IOW, for direct copies of entire albums, the work has already been done for you.

If you select an individual song and hit Command-I (or through the menu bar to File -> Get Info), you’ll get a window to pop up. Click on the “options” tab, and you can adjust the volume for that song.

If you want a software program to adjust the volume settings of your MP3 files so they’re all consistent, try MP3 Rage (shareware). It’s got a lot of features, but the volume adjuster is the one I use the most.
