Well, actually they’re white. And I know it isn’t a new complaint, or even an unusual complaint.
But I have really, really dark hair, and the white sticks out like a sore thumb. And they’re wiry, where the rest of it is soft and silky. There aren’t a ton, but I do see more every couple of months. Tell me about your gray hair! How old were you? How bad is it?
I’m 28! Going to be 29! Theoretically I guess it’s the age to start seeing a few, but it’s not supposed to happen to me, is it? Is it?! whimpers
So, should I dye it? Is there anything I can do to slow the onset? Should I just be proud of it? Aargh!
I saw my first gray hairs when I was 23 (I’m now 49), so I can’t take it seriously as a sign of age. (Well, on my head – the first time I saw some elsewhere on my body I freaked.) Like you, I’ve got very dark hair, so the gray, which is actually a very pretty silver, is really noticeable. Luckily, it grows in streaks, so it looks quite nice – I call them, not entirely jokingly, my natural highlights.
If you’re going to dye your hair, be prepared to spend a lot of money on it and do the upkeep – bad dye jobs look like shit, and roots look worse.
After many years of being clean-shaven, I decided to grow a beard sevral years ago, when I was about 32 or 33. My hair was blond when I was young, and had settled into a light brown when I grew up.
then my beard came in, and it was mostly grey! The hair on my head is still overwhelmingly brown (although there are more and more grey hairs popping up all the time), but my chin remains mostly grey.
I made a decision long ago that I was just going to live with whatever my hair decided to do (go grey, fall out, etc.), so it really doesn’t bother me. But if you don’t like it, go ahead and change it. We all do stuff all the time to make up for “problems” in our appearance. We dye our hair, whiten our teeth, wear clothes that make us appear taller/thinner/etc. There’s no reason to go around feeling bad about the way you look when there is something you can do easily and cheaply to change it.
On the other hand, it seems like you aren’t really sure yet whether you have a real problem or not. In that case, I suggest just letting things be for another month or two, and see how you feel then. Maybe it will cease to be an issue, and you will decide you can just live with it. Or else, maybe you will wake up one morning and decide it can’t go on any longer, and you can run to the pharmacy and pick up some hair dye.
Just don’t sweat it. And don’t worry about what anybody else may or may not think. Chances are they won’t think twice about it whatever you decide to do. Just do whatever makes you feel good. We can always use more of that in our lives.
Whatever you do, don’t yank them out! I did that years ago and wound up with a whole lot more. White, in fact. Now I get it professionally colored on a regular basis. Otherwise I’d have a white streak like a skunk.
I discovered my first white hair one month after I turned thirty.
My boyfriend cut it off very close to the scalp for me - he’s so sweet.
I found two more last week, he cut those for me, too.
FTR, he’s 26 and has lots of grey, he doesn’t think I should be freakin’ out, but he does it because it makes me feel better. I think its different for guys, most men actually look more attractive with a touch of grey, but women don’t. IMHO, of course.
I started seeing grays around 18. I’m 25. I have dark brown hair with lots of red in it, so they show up as really shiny white, especially in sunlight.
I tried dying it (not to get rid of the gray, necessarily) but just to dye it, but they don’t hold the dye. They stay brown for a week or so and then go back to white. So, I’m going to have silvery white hair, no matter what I do.
Me too! I shouldn’t complain though. My hair is blonde – going on brown – so you can’t really see the grey hairs. Well, I can see them and I don’t like them either (I’m 29 going on 30). Some of them are also wiry and they sometimes stick up on top of my head.
My mom has dark hair and her hair was almost completely grey by the time she was 26. She has been dyeing her hair ever since and it is an expensive and inconvenient practice to keep up. She feels that so many years of dyeing has ruined her hair - it’s now really thin and dry.
I think it’s fairly common to start seeing grey hairs in your 20’s. You should do whatever makes you feel comfortable. I haven’t decided what I will do when the grey becomes more obvious. I’m hoping I will learn to like it and be able to ignore the social connotations associated with grey hair. If I feel good about myself that’s all that really matters.
Oh, I do so agree with this! My boyfriend started getting silver peppering very young, in his early 20’s. He looks good with it. Men look distinguished…
women just look old.
My problem is my hair already has natural red and brown highlights. So the white stands out even more. Ugh. And I have dyed it before, to auburn. It looked pretty good, so I think I could dye it dark without too much trouble.
I’m 24 and I started to get white hairs last yr. Haven’t resorted to dyeing yet as plucking seems to suffice for now. It’s odd, they actually are very pretty but overall not a look I want at this age.
I’m 28, will be 29 next month, and I’ve been seeing gray hairs for about two years, but this year more than any other. It sucks, especially because my mom and sister are pushing for me to start dyeing my hair now, but I don’t want to, 'cause I’ve heard that once you start, you really can’t stop, or you’ll have awful roots. Still, I’m seriously considering going to the drug store and getting some Clairol.
Oh I totally disagree. I love grey and white hair. I haven’t met a single person I thought the grey hair made them look bad. It always makes them look better.
Especially when it’s in streaks or all white. Beautiful!
I have 2 now. Sally and Jessica. Sally is right smack dab in the middle of my head towards the front. She is about 4 -5 inches long now. One day she went missing and I freaked! But I found her again, and she pops up to say hi often.
Jessica I just discoverred a few weeks ago. She had been lurking underneath all my dark brown hair, close to the neck, off to my right a bit. She’s actually about as long as Sally, if not longer. I’ve only spotted her once. She’s elusive.
My grandmother had long, almost black hair with very few greys even when she was 80. My Mom said she didn’t grow them until she was much older. Grandma and I have similar hair color and texture-wise (Mom and I don’t). I fear I may not get many beautiful white hairs until I am very old. I wish so desperately for a streak or two!
30 here, and started seeing them about a year ago. The “widow’s peak” corners have gone completely white. Will be glad when it has all gone white, since I can pass as 22 or so otherwise, which makes being taken seriously as a professional difficult.
I’m 25 and going gray. I henna mine because it’s not too bad at the mo (the odd hair here and there some gray underneath close to scalp) so I don’t really look old-Indian-woman if you know what I mean. I also have that midnight black hair colour so I know what you’re going through. I’ve decided that by the time I go really gray I’m going to switch my colour to a dark brunette like Angelina Jolie or Kristin Davis because I have yet to see a realistic truly “black” hair dye job.
I found my first gray hair when I was 27. My hair color is a very dark blonde, so like most blondes, the grays aren’t really noticeable. I kinda like them; they have a lot more body and are thicker than my other hair (not too wiry), and they’re a lovely silver. They sparkle and shine. Most people see them and think that they’re just highlights.
i didn’t notice it, but it was brought to my attention.
I was sitting in class with my head on the table (i was naping. so what?) when the this guy i had a crush on - it was mutual - pointed at my head and practically shrieked. i thought i had ended up with some kind of weird bug in my hair. but no, it was a patch of white hair, the entire length of the rest of my hair.
i was 15 at the time.
i have dark brown hair and it comes in in patches in the front at the hairline and in bunches towards the back of my head.
i colored it at first, but now, for the most part, i let it go. i’ll color my hair every once in a while , usually in the summer, just for a change, but when i color it back to my natual color, i just leave it be.
For years, I had three…the same three. But this year, and specifically in the last six months, I’ve noticed more and more. I actually wouldn’t dye, at all, but there is one in my bangs. My bangs are really short and it shows up really prominently.
Like I said, my hair isn’t a uniform color to begin with. It’s deep, dark, brown, with lighter brown and even red highlights. I was born with auburn hair which is unusual for E Indians to begin with!
My hair is dark, dark brown (nearly black) and I get the coolest white hairs (I’m 29 btw). And my hair is very curly, but my white hairs are straight as can be, so they really stick out like a sore thumb. But I actually kinda like them, they’re brilliant white, and kinda neat looking.
