A quick glance at my post history shows that my last post before this one was 3 years ago yesterday… I’m not sure exactly how it happened, but at some point I stopped visiting the SDMB and started going to reddit for almost all of my semi-pointless internet discussions and news.
I just wanted to say, I’m ready to come back, if you’ll have me.
NEVER! May you be banished into the Realm of the Dopelessness FOREVER!
Or
Heya! Welcome back! You’ve been gone longer than I’ve been here, so…uh…there’s that.
I’ve dabbled with Reddit a couple of times, but it didn’t appeal to me. The thread interface throws me off. It makes me feel like I have to debug code.
There is no substitute for the forum format. Period. Its decline to a fringe medium against the thought-whim media is a huge loss for what the internet could have been.
Simple case in point: you can go back to any thread you posted in and pick up right where you left off. Some people do it ten years later. You’re lucky to get a full day on FB and Twitsy, maybe a week on Rubbit.
I tried reddit, but just couldnt “get” what was going on there. How does it work? I didn’t understand how you could have a discussion there–posts move around by the upvoting system, so there’s no continuity. There’s lots of interesting stuff…but it’s one-time only, not a back-and-forth discussion.
Somebody described it as going fishing…you cast your hook, maybe pull out a big, interesting post…but then it gets thrown back into the sea, and you may never see it again.
I think reddit’s default comment format is both a blessing and a curse. And yeah, I know you can pick how the comments are displayed, but on the one hand, you have the funniest/most helpful/most interesting comments at the very top, but by the time they reach the front page, they might be several hours old, and people seemingly abandon those threads forever once they’re done with them. Oh, well…
You know the drill … you have to stay here where we can watch you … if you leave you have to have a chaperone … you’ll never see the inside of one of these slutty boards ever again … you violated our trust, you’ll have to work hard to regain it again… get to the clinic and get yourself tested, we don’t want any viruses here …
But this message board of ours has words. Lots of words; very good words. The best words. We have the best words on our message board. Because we’re Dopers, and that’s what we do: use all the best words.
