I've been watching the various Discovery Health challenges and it seems like the guys

who win lose at least FIFTY pounds over the sixteen week show (some episodes have involved shorter periods of time). In addition, they typically cut their body fat by AT LEAST ten percent, and VASTLY improve their lipid, LDL, HDL profiles. I want to do this over the NEXT four months while I won’t be in school. Here is my basic profile. Thirty five year old male who weighs 267 pounds. When I was in the Navy serving in EOD, my weight was around 175 (I worked out around two hours per day not including Navy activities and ate no more than 20% fat, little sugar). I’m six foot tall, and would describe my metabolism as low to moderate for someone of my height and weight. Here’s my plan:

  1. Eat no more than 1500 calories per day for the first month. I will reduce this to no less than around 1200 calories after the first month. I will try to achieve a Pritikin/Ornish type diet high in complex carbohydrates, vegetables, fruits and grains, but low in saturated fats and simple sugars. I will simply continue my supplement regime which consists of Omega 3 Fatty Acids, high dose multiple vitamins, garlic, grape seed extract, coenzyme Q-10, alpha lipoic acid, lots of green tea, Saw Palmetto (trying to grow some hair back), Lycopene, and Acetyl L-Carnitine (my other brother works for a supplement company called NSI and gets me FREE supplements of my choice!).

  2. Seek to exercise about one hour and fifteen minutes per day with around thirty of that being strength/resistence training and the rest aerobic (walking, bike riding, row machine, stair climber ect).

  3. After the first eight weeks IF my BP has moderated (It currently averageing around 145/90) to no more than 125/85 I might consider adding caffein/ephedra combinations to boost my metabolism. I have read several studies that show they can increase BMR by ten to fifteen percent (I am aware of the potential risk that Ephedra carries, but my brother is an MD and says its generally safe if used under the right conditions. He claims he can still get me a prescription). This is only if my weight loss stagnates.

  4. I generally go to bed at around 5:00 AM and sleep until around 11:30 AM. Thus, I will consume NO calories after around 11:00 PM.

  5. I am going to cut down on use of the air conditioning because it’s been my experience that it makes me “lazy” during the Summer.

IF I can lose my 40 to 50 pound GOAL after 16 weeks I will seek to MAINTAIN ONLY until next Summer. At that time I will try and lose another forty to fifty pounds to get down to my “fighting weight”. WHEN, I reach my “target weight of around 175” I plan on following a PERMANENT calorically restricted diet of no more than around 1800 calories per day (of the type that Dr. Roy Walford has advocated) Also, how much of a problem can I expect from “excess skin” from the weight loss? Will this improve over time or am I just going to have to wait until I graduate from school and can afford plastic surgery? Thanks for any useful input. I expect the most fequent observation will be that “the ephedra is dangerous, and the supplements are of no proven value and may in fact be harmful”. I am aware of this perspective, and before I take ANY supplement I research it within my PDR for supplements and alternative mediciine (and run by my brother who is a Dr. of Internal medicine who consults for some professional sports teams).

I’m your height and I dropped from 250 to your target range and the only skin problems I had were some stretch marks. But those were presumably there already.

I think your time frame is optimistic. 3 pounds per week is hard.
