I've changed my mind

When I was young, I thought the musical interludes in the Marx Brothers movies were just filler. Chico on piano, Harpo on harp. Now I think they’re the best part of the film.

Your turn…

When I was young, I thought Bob Hope was funny. Now, almost never.

In my late teens, I thought Steven Spielberg was a genius. No more.

Growing up in the 1980s, I thought heavy metal music was the best. I now think the vast majority of it is garbage.

I used to think libertarianism was the way to go. That was a LONG time ago.

When I was young that’s how I felt about every musical interlude except for those. Those guys were good enough to punch some culture through my rock hard head. I recall some commentary on the scene where Chico and Harpo play for the families in steerage. The extras started out milling around but needed no direction to turn their attention to the performance, they were instantly rapt, the children gathering in front to see… Every joyous expression on those kids faces was unprompted, everyone there was hypnotized by two master entertainers.

Anyway, I changed my mind on like everybody else on the other stuff. Glad you can enjoy Chico and Harpo,

Growing up in the 90’s I thought classic rock was the best music ever made (I was a generation past it’s intended audience). I listened to a lot of it and had an extensive LP and CD collection. I even had a copy of both In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida and Let It Bleed on vinyl.

Now I cant stand 99% of it. Unfortunately there really isn’t any particular music that I do like. I’m starting to think I’m anomaly – I simply don’t like music anymore.

Except for Jimmy Buffet. I’ll listen to his stuff any day.

Me in the early 90s: “A Tim Burton film with Johnny Depp and a score by Danny Elfman? Sweet, count me in!”
Me in the early 2000s “A Tim Burton film with Johnny Depp and a score by Danny Elfman? Ugh, count me out.”

Heh, I had a girlfriend who had a Jimmy Buffet tape and I chuckled at it. Her reaction was “WELL, THERE’S ALWAYS FUCKING SOMETHING, ISN’T THERE?” That was pretty much the beginning of the decline. Same planet, different worlds. Haven’t changed my mind about it, even if she was pretty rockin’ otherwise.

What I have changed my mind about: I really liked Ted Nugent’s music when I was 16-18. By 20, I liked it ironically. Now, nah. Pass. Not even as kitsch. I’d rather listen to Boston, and I never really liked them on any level.

I’ve changed my mind

I hope this one works.

Many years ago I was slammed by a couple mods for pulling that gag. I thought it was funny, they did not. Now I don’t think it’s funny.

When I was 18, I thought Stranger in a Strange Land was the best book ever. Then I turned 19.

Of course. Starship Troopers is the best book ever. :slightly_smiling_face:

I was in college when The Lost Boys came out. Several of my friends were discussing it. One of my friends said, “If I had seen it when I was 16, I would have thought it was the greatest movie ever made.”

Animal House. The older I get, the more sympathy I have for Dean Wormer.

I still love Auntie Mame, but I get annoyed by her parlor-pink limousine liberalism.

I live in a state where the voting age is 18, but the drinking age is 21.
I used to believe that the drinking age should be lower.
These days, I often find myself thinking that the voting age should be higher.

I used to think there was something psychologically wrong with transgendered people, (or transsexuals as they were generally called at the time). Fortunately my former ignorance was successfully fought.

I wasn’t going to post to this thread.

I am a teacher in a boarding school. I have Animal House on DVD. I no longer sympathize with the Deltas.

When I met my wife she was a church-going Pentecostal who though gays were living a sinful life by choice just to be gross and piss off the righteous. Today she’s done a complete 180 and considers gay people to be, well, normal, everyday people not really different than anyone else. This change happened not long after she moved out of her parents house and in with me and started hanging around my progressive liberal atheist friends.

The older you get, the harder it is to identify with teens who think they’re cool. Anyone who doesn’t want to slap Holden Caulfield has lived wrong.

Or is 16 years old. Same for me re. Animal House. Still enjoy it but for different reasons.
