I've got one free day to kill in Albany, NY. What to do, where to eat?

The subject heading says it all.

I’ll be there all day this upcoming Monday. I like history, science, nature, good (but not fancy or expensive) food and quirky sights. One more thing… I will not have a car, so please only suggest places I can reach by bus or on foot.

Tell me your ideas.

Thanks all, in advance.

Where will you be? Downtown Albany has the State Museum and the Empire State Plaze complex near the capitol building. That would seem to fit your interests: it has hard, science, an nature exhibits, as well as history.

There’s also the Albany Institute of History and Art.

As for where to eat, how much are you willing to spend? Jack’s Oyster House is a great experience, but pricey. Lark Street has a bunch of restaurants; you can walk down it and take your pick.

If you’re staying in the Wolf Road area, there are plenty of places to eat, though most of them are chains (other than Reel Seafood).

I have a thing about state capital buildings, and the Albany building was one of my favorites. It’s fabulous. I may not be remembering correctly, but I recall that without leaving the capital building, we somehow wound up in a fun shopping mall (underground?). It may have been part of Empire State Plaza.

Only one day to kill? Better check your weapon inventory first.

The Empire State Plaza is an underground mall, but it’s not really shopping. There’s a Hallmark store, and the rest are pretty much cafeterias/banks/offices.

I second the recommendation for the State Museum and the Capitol tour. Both are good choices. Also downtown is the Schuyler House. All of that is within walking distance.
If you take the 22 bus north you can hop off at the Watervliet Arsenal Museum as well.

For quirky sights there’s the RCA dog and a UHaul trailer on top of a building.

You talking lunch or dinner food?
