So first off, I’m fine more or less. Secondly, this may be a bit TMI, so you’ve been warned. Last Wednesday, I ate lunch at the employee cafe. It’s set up buffet style and the choices change daily. That day one of the choices was baked chicken breast. Now, it’s the cheap ‘omg how can it be so flat’ chicken but it’s free so whatever. I made some into a sandwich and went about my way. About two hours later I start having stomach cramps and alternate between feverish and chills. I don’t feel great but it’s not enough for me to leave work. When I get home, the diarrhea starts. Cramping continues and I feel like shit so I call out the next day. By Friday the cramping has eased up but I’m still on the pot five to six times a day but I figure it’ll run its course soon. Well I’ve had diarrhea consistently since then. No signs of easing up even though I’ve been subsisting on mostly bananas yogurt and the occasional attempt at ‘real’ food. And it’s always the same thing. I start getting hungry, I eat something, and within minutes the diarrhea is triggered. I don’t feel bad otherwise really. No fever, no nausea (except when I try eating something more than yogurt/banana) but it just won’t stop.
Honestly, dehydration is a concern for me but I’ve had chronic issues with retaining fluids in my legs so I guess they’re supplementing me? lol Cause I’m not drinking more than normal. I guess it’s a testament to just how MUCH I’ve been retaining that I can still be relatively hydrated at this point. And I’m sure that 20lbs has been water weight. It’s a great diet program if it would stick, which I don’t expect it to. And yes, I have an appointment to see the doctor on Thursday I wish I knew what was causing this though cause I don’t think it’s the flu given the lack of other symptoms and everything I read about food poisoning says it’s usually over with in a few days.
Buffets are one of the worst places for picking up food-borne illnesses. Food sits out for hours at a time. Warming lamps keep the temperature perfectly regulated for all sorts of bacteria to grow in. Wow, I hope the doctor can do something for you, but it may just be a matter of, like you say, things running their course. I hope you feel better soon.
So my body faked me out. Yesterday things started ‘firming’ up a bit. Just a bit but I thought hey, progress. Today, I had cream of wheat for breakfast…nothing happened…never used the bathroom once. Lunch comes, I’m starving so I have a bit of real food. Didn’t go overboard. Doing great, thinking phew finally it’s over. Dinner time, I eat a normal dinner, not a large amount. Ten minutes later every last thing in my entire intestinal tract is voided from me in a gush of biblical proportions. I was just voiding myself of every last bit of waste that I could. So fucking hell, it’s still giving me issues. Hopefully the doctor visit will do some good but I have a feeling he’ll just tell me to stick to bananas and toast till it clears up.
I hope you feel better sooner than later, your doc may want to test you for salmonella. Per the Mayo site: Signs and symptoms of salmonella infection generally last four to seven days, although it may take several months for your bowels to return to normal.
I feel you I went to the fast food place Krystals and got a few “Krystal chicks” the other week. I basically have a steel constitution and never throw up but as soon as I finished the last one I knew something wasn’t right. I managed to make it about two hours before I projectile vomited repeatedly in a parking lot, and usually you feel better after that but I think I must have still digested some undercooked chicken or something because I literally ate nothing for two days and still didn’t feel right and ate very little for a week or so, even my mood and temperament felt off and I just didn’t feel myself for a while.
I dunno what I had, and it was over in 10 days, but then it was another week before I was functional again. I think perhaps I had stripped all the commensal bacteria out along with all the mucosal coating. And I’d gone from “spasm” to “complete loss of muscle tone” so stuff tended to just sort of dribble through me.
