I won’t link to an article. I’ll link to what Una_Persson said on these very boards. Its a complex and nuanced issue. Its seen very differently (in NZ) than it is in much of North America. I am neither agreeing or disagreeing with Una’s point. But Quillette published that article for a reason.
I remember that thread, must be where I got my knowledge from. Interesting to read it again, there are some pretty relevant comments. This one presages complaints made in this thread:
I do have to admit that when suddenly it comes out that people who formerly presented as male say something, he changed his mind - male privilege - cis women can say it and get told not to worry their pretty little heads but have a Y chromosome and suddenly you get taken seriously - it torqued me off.
