Umm, I don’t know where your swamp is, but I’ll toss this out here anyway; they have them at Eastern Market here in Detroit all the time in the summer. They’re hard to miss, w/ their sci-fi looks and size!
ah, cool…not too far, Detroit’s an hour or so from me. Good to know if I happen to take upon the quest.
See, now, THAT would be a fun Dopefest - a day at a big, eclectic, sprawling outdoor market! It’s analagous to us here on the Board, for one thing. Eastern Market’s got fruits, veggies, plants, flowers, antiques, a bakery, a gigantic meat market with stuff so fresh it’s wigglin’, gardening supplies, a wine store, swag vendors, younameit! Right near the front part, there’s an outdoor BBQ stand that sells what they call Dinosaur Burgers - 2 pound hamburgers you can walk around with, grease running down your arm and onto your shorts and shoes…
Oh, and of course wandering musicians who play for tips. Can we still call them minstrels in 2005??
Um, sorry for the tangent. You see what it’s like for my Urban Studies class…

You know, I was avoiding mentioning those so I didn’t get all horribly saudade-filled. It was really hard to come back to Columbus, Ohio after having been in Rio and parts of Northeastern Brasil. Now I’m totally craving suco de maracuja–the good, fresh stuff–suco de fruta, não suco de polpa. Oh, and northeastern Brasil also has the world’s best pineapple. Ever. They also have the coolest word for it–abacaxi.
Oh, and you left out mangaba, camu camu, and cacao. Acai com cupuacu and acai com cacao are the two best fruit combos on the planet, I’m convinced. (Not that I’ve travelled to everyplace on the planet–or, at least, not yet.)
And I think a Detroit open-air market dopefest would ROCK. So, when are we having it? And could we do it before June 1, when, if I’m lucky, I’ll be leaving town for the summer? [/pleasant hijack continued]
Anyway, now that I know there are jackfruits in Detroit, I’ll try to scout them out here in Ohio. I’d make a bet there aren’t any here in Columbus, but there might be in Cincinnati. And, if they can make it to Detroit, it’s probable they’ve managed to migrate to Cleveland. Which is kind of worth a field trip in its own right, since it’s the only city in OH that I know of to have genuinely good cannolis.
“Are you suggesting jackfruits migrate?”
