Jail Forces Defendant into Court Without Pants

So KNOWING that police brutality is a major problem in the country right now…
And KNOWING that oppression of black people is sure to get media attention…

Somebody thought it would be okay to march a shoplifting suspect into court with no pants.

Let me say that again: Somebody in a Louisville jail deliberately withheld pants from a female defendant, then deliberately marched her through the courthouse and made her stand in front of the judge with no pants on. Not because THEY had no pants, and not because SHE had no pants, but because the prison staff just didn’t WANT her to wear pants. They had all the pants they could ever want, they just didn’t feel like giving her a pair.

There’s a video of the whole thing. First the judge is shocked by the fact that they are trying to give a shoplifter a 75 day sentence. Then she’s in the middle of dealing with this, when she realizes the defendant has no pants on. You can SEE the exact moment it dawns on her and she says… “Is this for real?”

The judge later becomes exasperated with the idea that someone would force a defendant to come to court without pants, and asks, “What is this?… Am I in the Twilight Zone?… What is happening?”

And I’ve got to ask: Who thought this would be okay? Even assuming that they just forgot to issue her pants when she was in-processed or something, after the second or third day did nobody stop to ask, “Um… Why does this lady still not have any pants?” It’s not like they ran out of hotel towels or something.

BUT EVEN THEN… On the day that she has to go to court for sentencing, somebody in the jail (multiple people, probably) saw this lady come out of her cell with no pants on, marched her through the courthouse to the courtroom, and let her stand in front of the judge, KNOWING she had no pants, and the whole time thinking, “Yep, this is totally normal.”

I used to be a huge supporter of the police and the criminal justice community in general, but right now they have NO credibility where black people are concerned. NONE. And shit like this is just disgusting.

And the best part is that it keeps happening. Someone was sitting in this jail and was like, “You know how black people have been rioting in the streets for the last two years over police brutality and outrageous murders? I think now would be a good time to fuck with them some more.”
