Jamaican sprinters: is Carl Lewis right to be suspicious?

On reflection, fair point. Thanks.

I’m not a sprinter. It was a serious question. Its a 10 second race, not like there’s a whole playbook of strategy to it. Just run as fast as you can, the end. That’s why I asked

You have to be joking.

Apparently not. Just run as fast as you can. The end.

Dope in Jamaica? Jah, say 'taint so, Mon!

I don’t get where the snark’s supposed to come from. I asked honestly because I don’t know how sprinters train. Running is very basic, very primal. You just move your legs. Stronger legs means faster movement. How would I know how an Olympic level sprinter trains? All I have is a vision of a guy behind him on a motorcycle yelling “Go faster!” How does training with Usain Bolt differ from training with your high school track team? And its a 10 second race, how much thinking can you really do? Geez, some people think they know everything

Here you go, this is a very quick summation of the different parts of the 100m: http://www.teachpe.com/track_and_field/sprints/sprint_5_components.php

Did you miss post immediately following your question?

There’s a lot of work on perfecting running mechanics. It’s not just run fast. It’s run in a very, very specific way that is not the way ordinary people run when they’re running flat out. To convince yourself of this, check out a clip of Jesse Owens running the 100m at Berlin, and compare it to the form used by modern sprinters.

And then there’s sculpting the body to be the perfect 10 second running machine, having all the muscles needed for running peak speed and none that aren’t.

And then finally there’s using a regimen that will have your form peaking at exactly the right time.

I was responding to the snark after that. No I did not miss that post

It only takes .3 seconds for a pitched ball to meet the batter’s bat, which does not mean there isn’t a lot of training in learning how to be a major league hitter.

“Run fast” isn’t good enough, just as “Swing hard and hit ball” isn’t good enough. HOW do you run fast? Explain to me how you run the 100 metres in 9.7 seconds instead of 10.7. It’s not enough to have strong legs, not even close to enough. How, precisely, do you move your arms? Your technique with your arm swing must be perfect, or you have no chance whatsoever. How do you begin the race? How many steps, exactly, do you take before elevating yourself to a fully upright position? How do you make sure that in the 3 seconds it takes to do that, you never make a mistake, never take one step more or less than you’re supposed to? Are your feet straight on every step? Are you sure? Is your weight correcting balanced on the starting block?

The runner’s scheme for running the race must be precisely aligned with the distance as well; there’s a reason Usain Bolt does not compete in the marathon and marathon runners don’t compete with him. It’s not who attains the fastest speed - there’s no competition for that. It’s who is the fastest over 100 metres, so your race plan has to be trained out to maximize the time take to run that distance. Not 200 metres, not 150, not even 110 or 90.

What kind of name is Dick Pound anyway?

Had to be rough growing up with that combo.

I don’t think Bolt is doping. I find it equally likely that he’s simply from another planet.

I wouldn’t wanna mess with a guy named Dick Pound; I’d be willing to bet he learned how to fight very early in his life. (See also: “The Boy Named Sue”)

Usain Bolt and Dick Pound sound like minor members of the Justice League of America.

Here’s an Olympics tip; don’t choose an event in which your main competitor’s name sounds like a superhero. You don’t run against Usain Bolt any more than you should try winning a swimming race against Jim Aquaman.

I joined this forum just to make a post in this thread. My gut feeling tells me Bolt is doping, but who cares what I think? Here’s what we do know: In the next generation of sprinters, there is going to be a cluster of super athletes who are 6’4" or taller and roided out to the max.

For the athlete who has a huge ego trip, being in Bolt’s position is the ultimate. It’s better than being a star wide receiver in the NFL. So, those are basically the two pristine options for a roided out, super fast, egotistical, fast twitching, freakishly quick monster. It’s either wide receiver in the NFL or it’s Olympic Gold medalist in the 100 m. I don’t see too many NFL players hanging out with the Swedish female swimming team, like Bolt did.

So, instead of trying to provide integrity to this joke of a drug testing system and wanting to see an “even playing field”, and all that B.S., let’s just sit back and enjoy the freak show. I want to see some huge roided out sprinter with a Lebron James physique running a 9.49, while taking only 40 steps to complete the 100 m. That would be amazing! Give us more roid freaks please!

You need to see a 100 m live where sprinters are running around 10.0 seconds. You’ll get it then. The first time you see someone run that fast IN REAL LIFE, you will not believe your eyes. You will know inherently that there is a tremendous amount of science, training, and technique to enable them to run that fast. Your brain, if working properly, will tell you there is no other way.

But this is the internet. People know stuff cos it’s what their gut is telling them: they don’t need no real world shit to get in the way.

Yip, that’s why he, you know, asked how it was done.

Not to mention that the post you are responding to is using their gut to assume that science is involved. To actually check if science is involved does not require firsthand experience.

Um what? Are you saying I used my gut to assume science is involved. Read my post again, and quote me where in the world you go that.

I was a sprinter in high school and some college. We used a lot of science, training, and technique at that level, which was nowhere near Olympic level. So, the Olympic level is obviously at an obsessive-compulsive level of science, training, and technique. For people who don’t have this experience (like the poster to which I was responding), a normal functioning brain that can processes the viewing of a REAL LIFE sprint will automatically inform the person there is no way to compete at Bolt’s level by merely “running fast”, as that poster said.

Come on. It’s kind of idiotic we’re arguing this point. Isn’t it? We are actually arguing why one would think the Olympic 100m involves science, training, and technique. To put things a nicely as I can, there are no valid reasons for thinking otherwise. I’ll go further to say the 100 m is the most analyzed, dissected, and reevaluated race of all the races, merely because it’s the most important. It’s not my favorite, but it is the most important. No other race spawns this type of discussion.

Carl Lewis is such scum. He is really an awful jealous person that cant stand to be out shined. Look at the crap he said in this article. The video in it no longer players but you can tell he just cant stand being out shined.
