Apparently young people in Japan aren’t drinking as much as older generations, and it’s causing a drop in tax revenue.
You’ll try anything to generate revenues and taxes when your economy has been stagnant since the 1990s. Makes perfect sense to me from a short-term financial perspective, not that it’s a good idea in the long run.
Probably a good thing. Japan’s salaryman drinking culture is nuts, so I hear. It’s like mandatory work socialization, combined with frat-boy-style hazing. People seem to do it out of ritual and habit, not because they actually enjoy it.
Another instance of kids being slackers.
Maybe it will lead to more unprotected sex as well, improving their age demographic situation.
That was my first thought as to the reason.
