As for “tentacle on boy” porn, I had the misfortune once of checking out a link to a “shota” site which was posted on a board I moderated. Suffice it to say that the NAMBLA people would have enjoyed it – a tentacle monster seizing a boy, retaining his limbs with four tentacles while penetrating him anally with another and masturbating him to orgasm with a sixth, was mild compared to some of the images. :eek: (Needless to say, that link got deleted!)
It was mentioned in that thread that at one point, actual penetration by a penis was considered obscene, while depiction of genitalia, anuses, etc. – and their penetration by other objects – was not, in Japanese standards. So a great number of phallic objects found their way into Japanese erotic art. How accurate this information is, I cannot validate – but I report it as of interest in connection with this discussion.

I can offer little in the way of factual answers to the OP’s question.
- It seems generally accepted that Toshio Maeda’s Urotsukidoji (yes, I spelled it correctly on the first try)is the first modern foray into the genre, and that he did indeed use it to get around censorship. It seems strange today, since as far as I can tell, there is no modern day restriction on sex acts per se, but only on the depiction of genitalia. I remember when the first time I saw the Urotsukidojo series in the late 1990s, I was quite suprised by the fact that there was no censorship of any kind, although I cannot remember if there were any explicit depictions of normal sex. I think any censorship regulations that were in place in 1987 would have long been superceded, but perhaps it was the spark that started the genre off.
- This fellow seems to think that the influence of Christianity in the west and Shintoism in Japan seems to have something to do with it.
I’ve never been to Japan and I am not intimately familiar with Japanese culture, although I imagine real Japanese society probably differs somewhat from their portrayal in porn movies, so I can’t pass judgement either way.
Perhaps one day, when my other goals in life are met, I will move to the west coast, do some graduate school and establish myself as the authority on this subject.
I’m wondering if the Japanese porn sensibility doesn’t have more to do with what’s happening in Japanese society today. Japanese society has been very male dominated. Women have been expected to subservient to men, obedient, etc. But modern Japanese women are having none of it. As a result, they aren’t marrying. From what I understand, there’s a growing cultural gap between Japanese men and women that isn’t healthy to that culture.
It makes me wonder if the men’s desire for porn that fixates on power and control over women isn’t a reflection of that problem.

Good point, I’d considered mentioning old Ghastly, but I figured the point of this discussion was use of this as true porn, and while Ghastly can be a tad graphic sometimes, I don’t really think of it as porn. But hey, my favorite comics are the “drunk-and-bitter Jesus” ones.
