Jaywalking

Dogster, I’d like to propose that the term may not be “jaywalking”, but rather “J-walking”.

My personal theory on this (I’m going to ask you to visualize, so close your eyes. No, wait, maybe just one eye…) is that say you’re walking North up Anystreet USA on the east side of the street (on a Tuesday) and you notice a newsstand on the West side of the street. As you continue walking past the latitude whereby the newsstand is located you suddenly remember you forgot to pick up the new Reader. The next crosswalk – the corner – is too far and you begin to cross in a westbound direction and also head slightly south to hit the newsstand. You, happily, now have your Reader and also an invisible path in the shape of a “J”.

Just my thoery, of course.

Maybe it’s an acronym for “just a yahoo” walking. One WAG deserves another. Pretty soon someone will look this thing up and make us both look doofish.

My Webster’s supports Dogster’s theory:

The etymology refers to the second definition for “jay”: a foolish person.
