I’ll confess now, it’s latin jazz. I asked this question over a year ago in GQ (before there was a CS) and got zero responses. So here’s hoping this forum will return better results.
I’m looking for very early Willie Colon. His 3rd to about his 6th album, all '70s.
La Gran Fuga
El Juicio
Lo Mato
Cosa Nuestra
Asalta Navideno
Plus others.
I’ve got a hankering to listen to Aguanile, Che Che Cole and Calle Luna, Calle Sol. And of course the very excellent Vo So. And Abuelita. And how can I forget Ah, Ah. Oh No.
Hey, while your at it, where can I find El Gran Combo and Tito Puente from around the same time? Huh? Anybody know?
Mini rant coming–
What in the hell is up with Fania records? They treat their artists and fans like crap and yet they still continue to exist. All of the albums I mentioned above went gold. At least one went triple platnum, but go look at their backlist. . …
What is that Fania All Stars garbage? And what kinda of crappy website is that? Please show your real backlist and not the garbage you are trying to push, thankyouverymuch.
I hope I can get lucky finding these old gems. Cuando llegara la dia de mi suerte?
llega ante de mi muerte
Seguro que me suerte cambiera
As an alternative, you can “burn” an old album to CD on your computer. I have done this with several LPs that never made it to CD. I use “pop filter” software to try and clean up the sound of older, scratchy LPs, although this must be used sparingly or you may lose some sound quality.
IANAL, but I understand that, so long as you do this re-recording for your own use and not for re-sale, it is legal to do so.
El Jucio and Lo Mato are on the first page of the search, and Asalta Navideno is on the second page. (I tried to link directly but it kept listing my User ID number.)
The other two are listed as limited availabilty at Amazon, but are listed at CDNow:
** MisterThyristor **, have you actually tried ordering any of those CD’s? Backlisted, on order or some other nonsense. I’ve actually wasted money on placing an order (not on-line, at a record store) for cassettes of the darn things. Nada.
All my selections are backordered on CDnow. I’ve no confidence I’ll get them. Amazon tells me I have to wait 6 to 8 weeks (or somesuch-- I tried Amazon a year ago.) As I mentioned in my OP, I blame Fania Records— the bastards!
Well, that’s why I asked if I was missing something. I don’t have experience with this artist, but I have ordered many times from CDNow with no problems for other hard-to-find artists.
OK, here’s one more shot at it. You can try GEMM. They are kind of like a half.com for CDs, they connect buyers with sellers. (I know that half.com carries CDs, and you might try there also, but half.com is better for books and gemm.com is better for CDs.).
For example, I looked up El Jucio. GEMM shows that HausBlue, the “Latin Record Collector’s corner” in Orlando, FL has one copy (new CD) in stock for $15.89. You could call them at 407-657-1987 and see if they have sold it yet.
GEMM has both new and used CDs from all sorts of stores and private collectors. Unfortunately, sometimes you will pay collector’s prices for rare items.
