We spend a week on the Outer Banks every summer and every time have driven a Blazer, a Cherokee, or something similar, on the sand. Last year we used our new Jeep Patriot, and the thing is so styled and low to the ground and so fragile underneath that it barely worked. Sand was dragging on much of the lower surfaces. A vinyl shield that was taped over the brake lines with what looks like duct tape slid all the way to the rear like an accordion. A sheet metal shield isolating the gas tank from part of the exhaust plumbing slid out from under the strap that holds it, and got caught around the flanged driveshaft entering the differential. And I had to try to drive on the high spots between the ruts to keep from getting stuck.
What would help this situation? Are there lift kits that would increase our clearance? How can I tell whether I can fit larger tires?
Thanks!
